She Write* Abont the Me Dow Case and the Swiss Maid* From The Auiettsta Chronicle of the 9th inst. A lady of evident refinement and eulture,* residing in Charleston, and from her style, we judge, a Southern woman, writes about the McDow ae- ijiiittal as follows, in a private letter to a lady friend in Cincinnati: The yerdict which has acquitted a self-confessed seducer, perjurer and assasin, has shocked tl e whole state, except the mass of negroes who shout ed in the court house: “It w’as a vic tory of the colored man over the white,” and a handful of low whites, personal enemies of Capt. Dawson, who took advantage of a perjured fury's verdict to express the malice and rage of years. The negro jury commissioner, Ingliss, put into office by Capt. Dawson’s power, is the man who put his hands into the fury box and stirred up the names of the jury men. This was sworn to by three prominent gentlemen, aud not de nied by Ingliss. Of the whites in the jury-box (on the jury) only one was a f entleman by the accident of birth, 'he other white jurors areopen politic al enen ies of Capt. Dawson, and an other said during the trial, at a public table, that he “hoped McDow would be acquitted.” The judge comes from McDow’s county, and ruled through out the whole case against the prose cution, and decided that a man’s of fice is Ids home! That office opened on the street, and was not the house entrance. The negro driver who swore he heard words (which McDow swore he had noi spoken), and iieard the shot and groans, was seated on his hack 150 feet from McDow’s office. Speaking of the “woman in the case” this lady says: The Swiss maid proved herself on the stand to he what we have always believed ber, an innocent, virtuous girl. Her absolute truthfulness, even where she admitted her folly in meet ing and listening to McDow’s prom ises of marriage, was so evidently sincere, that it routed the wiliest old lawvenj at the bar. Old lawyers say that she proved herself the most able witness, as well as the most pathetic S icture they ever saw in a court.' udge Twiggs, of Georgia, said to counsel: That girl is the personifica tion of virtue and truth. Hardened old lawyers spoke of her with tears in their eyes, and some of them ask ed to be allowed to shake her hand and to express their respect. I can say she is as hue a character as I ever knew—fearlessly truthful, honest and kind, and rarely iuteligeut. She is only a peasant girl, and motherless. August as a Hatching Month. Southern Cultivator. We believe that the August hatched chicken makes the best fall chicken; that chickens batched the last week of August or the first week of September grow faster, have more vitality, and are hardier generally than those ear lier in the summer or latec in the fall, and why? In the first plaee but few have moulted or begun to molt dur ing the first part of August; hence thett still possess their customary vigor,-and tne eggs -liTirTas* iCTtlie as usual, whereas, if one should wait un til they begin to molt before setting any eggs, their eggs—what few they lay—would not hatch worth mention ing. Secondly, the heat of summer usually breaks the last of August and there is a comparative coolness and freshness about the atmosphere that is very congenial to little chick ens. Then follow the bright and pleasant days of September, October and a part of November, when chick ens grow well and feather rapidly. But the greatest drawback to raising fall chickens is the mosquitoes. These pests bite them about the head and cause their eyes to swell up, and pro duce pimples aud sores, leading one to think that chickenpox or roup had entered the Hock. To avert this a close netting or mosquito bar should be stretched about the roosting coop at night, so as to keep the mosquitos away from the little chickens. If this S recaution is taken, August and early eptember hatched chickens may he raised successfully. A GUII/TY COUPIjE. Arrested for Murdering Their Child Eight. Years Ago. Chattanooga, Tknn., Aug. 9.— Dave Bellew and wife were arrested to-day in a secluded part of Walden’s ridge^ about twenty-live miles from the city, by Detective W. H. Geavor, of Asheville, N. C., and Officer T. J. Howard, of this city, on a charge of having murdered their live year old child, near Asheville, eight years ago. They were committed to jail to await requisition papers. In September 1881, Bellew and his wife lived near Asheville, and they •innounced that their live year old child had mysteri ously disappeared. Armed * men searched tte country round about for months, with no success. In the spring following Bellew left and went to Texas, where he remained two or three years, and then lie and his wile disappeared and have not been heard from until about a mouth ago. i,el- lew had built and owned the house in which he lived at Asheville, and sold his plaee on leaving. A short time ago having to make some improve ments, the hearth in the sitting room of the cottage was torn up and the hopes of l he child, together with dot h - lug enough t.* identify the body of tin- lost chilli were found. Burch, of the Fort Royal and Western Carolina rail way. The stone is of a bluish-gray color, aud was taken from the stomach of a deer. It is an old family heirloom, and has often been used In cases of snake bite, and never failed to effect a cure. Be ing porous, it absorbs the poison, turn ing green. The national monument Iq the Pil grim Fathers was unveiled afr-.Plym- outh, Mass., on Friday. The oration was made by Congressman Brecken- ridge, *of Kentucky. The estimate of the Augusta ex change is that about one-eighth of the crop in Georgia and South Caro lina woulb go forward wrapped in cotton bagging. This means that out of 1,200,000 bales of cotton—800,000 in Georgia and 450,000 in South Carolina —150,000 hales, would use cotton in stead of jute. Letters to the Manufacturers’ Re cord from leading manufacturers in the Soutli as to the outlook for the cotton industry indicate that the pro duction of coarse cotton goods in the South is temporarily in excess of the demand, and that the Soutli must di versify its cotton manufactures, make finer goods and also seek a foreign maaket by the means of direct steam ship line to South America. r *'here is already a growing tendency towards the production of finer goods, and one South Carolina mill is making goods that are largely imitated on ac count of their excellence by New England mills. A bill has been introduced in the Georgia legislature similar to the local option law of South Carolina. It provides that, beginning January 1st, 1890, it shall be unlawful for any person to sell, barter or exchange spirituous, alcoholic or malt liquors or other intoxicants outside of incor porated towns or cities in that State. The words towns and cities are to be construed as meaning towns and cities having a population of more than 500 and having police protection. The bill will not effect counties or towns in which the sale of intoxi cants is now prohibited under exist ing laws. A VERY LARGE PERCENTAGE. The Macon News bewails the gam bling, licentiousness and drunkenness which prevails in that fair city, and says Macon has the most corrupt mor als of any city in the State; and even goes so far as to say that Atlanta— which is called the Chicago of the South—is a moral vineyard beside Ma con. The Rev. Mr. Howard, or Hewlett, whose sensational libel suit at Nash ville resulted in a verdict of one cent damages, will appeal to the Supreme Court for a new trail on the ground that the jury acted under the delusio n that their verdict would throw costs on the defendants.
