THE CHOP REPORTS.
The Farmer* of Ibe Stale Much En
couraged.
Colukbia, S, (*., June 15.—The
Department of Agriculture, as a re
sult of the reports of many correspon
dents, sends out the following in rela
tion to the weather conditions and
the crop outlook in South Carolina.
The seasonable rainfall throughout
the State, as far as reported, was fairly
distributed, and with a normal tem
perature and an average amount of sun
shine, has been of untold benefit to
the agricultural community. The
corn and cotton crop so far show good
stands and favorable prospects. Corn
in the lowlands has been injured to
some extent by freshed. Rice in the
uplands shows a bad stand, yet may,
under favrable conditions, improve.
The fruit crops are abundant. The
farmers are working diligently to keep
the grass down, and are much encour
aged with the present outlook.
Washington, June 15.—The weath
er has been warmer than usual in the
States on the Atlantic coast, and
cooler in the central valleys from the
Gulf coast northward to the Lake re
gion and Minnesota. There has been
more rain than usual generally
throughout the agricultural districts
in the central valleys and on the At
lantic coast, except in Southeast New
England and along th j South Atlan
tic coast, where numerous showers
are reported. The rains are unusually
heavy over the central and western
portions of the cotton region and ov^r
the tobacco regions of Tennessee.
Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia
and Southern Indiana, the heaviest
rains occurring in the lower Missis
sippi valley, where they were greatly
needed.
The large defic ency in rainfall for
the season, previously reported oyer
the cotton region and Tennessee, has
been greatly reduced by recent heavy
rains, wliere the rainfall for the sea
son now exceeds 70 per cent, of the
normal. Generally throughout the
Middle Atlantic States, Eastern North
Carolina, and from Iowa and Nebras
ka southward to the west Gulf coast,
there has been more rain than usual.
The crops were generally letarded in
Kentucky and Tennessee, owing to
heavy daily rains and little sunshine.
In some sections of these States
wheat has been damaged by insects
and injured by excessive rains, al
though corn, cotton and tobacco are
reported as growing well, but dry
weather is needed for cultivation.
Reports from North Carolina, South
Carolina, Alabama and Louisiana in
dicate that the weather was favora
ble for all crops, which show decided
improvement since the recent rains.
In Mississippi and Texas the rainfall
was excessive, and the crops haye
been more or less injured in some
sections, especially in Texas, where
the weather has been too cool for
cotton.
The Prospects for Watermelons—the
Crop In Georgia.
If disease has entered the system
the only way to drive it out is to puri
ty and enrich the blcod. To this end,
as is acknowledged by all medical
men, nothing is better adapted than
iron. • The fault hitherto has been
that iron could not be so prepared as
to be absolutely harmless to the teeth.
This difficulty has been overcome by
the Brown Chemical Company of
Baltimor**, Md., who ofier their
Brown’s Iron Bitters as a faultless
iron preparation, a positive cure for
dyspepsia, indigestion, kidney troub
les. etc.
Last mouth, it is claimed, was the
wettest May Washington, D. C., has
ever experienced. According to the
signal office 8.67 inches of rain fell.

RUBY S LETTER,
A correspondent of the Savannah
Morning News has recently visited
the principal melon growing coun
ties of South Georgia, and reported
fully as to prospects.
the winding up of the Georgia
GpSnlngofthe ^ tiro J ina crop, we take
a few facts and figures from his bird’s-
eye view of the situation:
According to the estimates recently
made at the meeting in Atlanta of the
several traffic managers of the va
rious lines, the grand total of car-
loads for the present year trom South
Georgia is put down at 8,729, or 2,000
loads above the receipts of 1888.
Competent judges believe, however,
that the crop will fall considerably
short of these figures. This will be
owing in part to a reduction in the
acreage, and the May and April
drought. The growing vines, though
generally clear of grass and healthy,
are quite short and have not as yet
borne abundantly. A dry season, it
is true, is favorable to the growth of
melons, and nothing can affect them
more disastrously than long-contin
ued rainy spells. Subjected to this
ordeal, the fruit changes color and be
comes speckled or decays, and the
vines frequently die outright But
still gentle showers and a sufficient
amount of moisturo are indispensa
ble to the perfect growth and devel
opment of the melon. These, until
now’, have been lacking, and, as a
consequence, the fruit is scarcer than
usual and more backward. Timely
seasons, however, will do much to
remedy this deficiency.
Nineteen counties grow’ and export
large quantities, and other localities
make smaller productions and ship
ments. The first shipment in 1888
was made from Pelham on 7th June,
but owing to the drought none will
go forwaid this year sooner than from
the 17th to the 20th. On the 3d inst.,
melons were about the size of a man’s
head. ,
Not more than one-half of the
melon shipments last year defrayed
freight charges, and barely one-fourth
of the planters realized any profit on
their investments in melons. This
was ascribed to high freight rates and
the false dealing of agents.
The general desire now is to sell the
melons delivered at the home depots,
to agents of Northern and Western
dealers. The growers say it will pav
them better to sell at five cents apiece
at home than to risk shipments.
Freight reductions for this year
have been quite liberal. Counting in
the increased allowance in loading, of
two tons to the ci.r, the reduction is
fully $20 on each car. The number of
ventilated cars will be largely in
creased on all the routes.
SAVED FROM CONSUMPTION.
Several physicians predicted that
Mr. Asa B. Rowley, a Druggist, ofChi-
cago, would soon have consumption
caused by an aggravated case of ca
tarrh. Customers finally induced him
to try Clarke’s Extract of Flax
(papillon) Catarrh Cure. He says:
“The result was unprecedented. I
commenced to get well after the first
application and am now, after a few
w’eeks, entirely cured.” It will do
the same for you. Price $1.00. Try
Clarke’s Flax Soap for the skin and
you will use no other. 25 cents. All
of Clarke’s Flax remedies are for sale
at Hall’s Aiken Drugstore.
A letter from Mr. J. W. Ruby,
