V. 16. Mark and Lnko supply two very in
teresting features of this case. From one
we learn that bo was a ruier, i. e., n member
of the Sanhedrim. From the other wc learn
that he came running. Ho was in earnest,
and not afraid to have it known that he was.
He was not satisfied with what the doctors
of the law taught concerning this groat
question. Ho felt, he was suit', there was
Bomething more. B#t what was it? Where
should bo find the opo who could lift the
veil and let in tho light I It would seem f. om
tbo narrative that ho had been-following
Jesus secretly, or without making himself
known. Ko wanted to hear what this great
teacher would say about it. Aud now, cs
ho hears his la^t words, ho could restrain
himself no longer. JIo came running to
Jesus, with the great question, “Gootl lla^-
terl what must I do that I ma}* have eternal
lifer’ or, “inherit eternal life?”
Y. 17 IV furo answering his question our
Lord, gently yet pointedly, rebukes him for
tho use of the title by which ho addressed
him. Vf iiy dii he use it? Ho did not n:ean
it. Ho did not mean to say that ho (Jesus)
was tho good. For that title belongs only to
one—or to Ooel. And, as an unmeaning com
pliment, ho could not receive it. N'o*.v this
doon not mean that Jesus declined a title be
longing only to God; but that tho young
ruler himself did not mean to intimate, that
it so ladongod to him. And therefore hn
could not receive it from him. Now, in our
1-ordV answer to the young ruler's question,
wo mast observe that he answered from his
standpoint. Ho occupio*! the ground on
which he stood. His question was, “What
shall I do that I may have, or inherit, eternal
Idol” He would have it as the result of his
own doings. Ho proposed to work for it. Ho
wanted to have it, as of debt, ns a working-
loan receives bis wages. And so tho matter
replies to, him. “Keep the commandments.' 1
He did not propose the difficulties of tho
cas'\ He would have him ascertain these for
himself. He would have him find out b r
himself that obedience to the law, as tho
price of eternal.life, was a chain of macy
links, and if one of these was broken the
chain itself was worthless. It olTered no
connection between the man and the object
he had In view. Hut tho young ruler did
not see this. And so
V*. 18-‘JO. When he heard the Lord’s an
swer he at ones asked wluch of (Jit* com
mandments ho meant. And in answer the
Lord cited tho sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth
and fifth, while Mark adds tho tenth. Now
all these were of tho second tabic of tho law.
Not a word is said about those of tho first
table. The young man's relation to God
seems to have been entirely left put of the
question. Why was this? And there seems
to be no doubt about the answer. For it is
manifest that our Lord meant to show how
utterly hopeless his caso was, even on his
own chosen ground. For, if ho promised to
be saved by the works of tho law, or to enter
into life because of obedience to tho law, it
must bo very clear that he had obeyed the
law. Now, if it wero a question of obedience
to man’s law—L e., if it concerned tho out
ward act alone—it would be very easily set
tled. But. if that “law is spiritual;” If the
lustful thought is adultery and the angry
thought is murder, then the rase, is a very
different one.
The young ruler proposed to win eternal
life by tho deeds of the law. Now tho sum;
ming up of the second table of the law is,
“Thou shnlt love thy neighbor as thyself.”
He* said he did. And Jesus replied in effect.
“If you do it is very easy to prove it. You
would not hesitate to part with anything 3'on
have to relievo j our own wants. Now why
should you hesitate to relievo the necessities
of your neighbor! You would not if you
loved him qs you do yourself. 1-Tow, therc-

fore, go uiul do it, and prove your claim is
true. This was the simple issue; and ouc
more clearly defined could not well be pre
sented. And is that all? No. For that
might spring from a motive utterly inad-
inissable. And so tho Master adds, “and
come and follow me.”
V. gj. How true to tho life this is. How
clear the revelation it makes of tho ruling
j*ower in this young ruler’s heart. Doubt
less he was attracted by the Master's teach
ing; but tho glitter of bis gold had a brighter
luster iu bis eye*! Doubtless he was con
cerned for his eternal life. But clearly, the
l>renenf had for bin* the greater attraction,
lie was in “tho valley of decision,” and
quietly j ielded to the power of the present
and the seen! “Ho turned and wont away,
for bo hail groat possessions.” Tho present
and the eternal life were weighed against
each other, and the beam went down on the
side of the present. Poor young man!
V. 315,24. It Is not hard to imagine the deep
compassion that moved in tire Master's
breast, asheturnud to his disciples and spoke
those words. Doubtless they had seen and
beard all that hail passed^ and be would
shield them now from any wrong impres
sions the young ruler's example might make
ujk>*i them. And if wo ask for the reason
underlying the deelarationof the Master—or
•why it is hard for a rich man to enter the
kingdom of God—there soetus to !><• two r a-
sons, r. e.:
1. Riches beget a sense of power in the
bolder of them. Therefore the rich man is
commonly puffed up w ith a r.euse of his im
portance. He cun do anything; and his pride
erects itself even against God.
2. Riches become an object of trust tp their
possessor. They seem to break down tho
simplicity of childlike faith in God. How
can In* pray, “Give us this day oiu- daily

by Major I). B. Anderson and Mr.

A. S Rarrett, who had waived a
preliminary examination and given
bond at Bishopvillo yesterday in the
sum of $800 for his appearance at the
Court of Sessions.
"Xyheij the case was called the
sherilf, who had the warrants under
which the defendants wero arrested,
was not present, and new warrants
were issued by the Court after some
argument by the counsel for the de
fence. This caused some delay, asui
the hearing was not commenced
until 1 o’clock. The examination on
the part of the prosecution was con
ducted by Mr. Peyton G. Bowman,
Jr.
After the cauclusion ef the tesli-
fhony arguments for the defence were
made by Mr. John T. Green and
Major I). B. Anderson. Major An
derson read quite a "number of
authorities, but the arguments were
chiefly confined to a review of the
testimony. These gentlemen were
followed by P. f*. Bowman, Jr, who
delivered a short argument in which
ie labored to prove a conspiracy on
the part of John R. K‘els and D. E.
Keels to kill him.
On life conclusion of the arguments
the Court announced that it wotib.
require John It. Keels to give bond
