knows when and how it will end.
Since the great earthquake shock of
the 23d ult., we have had thirty-two
slighter ones, all causing more or less
damage, owing to the weakened and
insecure condition of many buildings,
resulting from the first violent dis
turbance. A perfect panic prevails,
and it is estimated that over 18,000
persons in tlws part of the country
have abandoned their houses, and are
living on boats or encamped in the
public squares. On the night of the
6th the excitement was intensified by
an alarm (happily false) that the sea
was rising and a tidal wave approach
ing. Sick and well, old and young,
rushed from their homes and fled as
they were to t he most elevated parts
of the city. No one who has not been
through such an epidemic of earth
quakes can in any measure realize the
‘terrors of such a visitation. We
shall remain in suspense until after
16th, as Professor Walk, of Germany,
the Savant, (who, two weeks in ad
vance of its occurrence, foretold the
shock of the 23d,) now predicts
another on that date, far exceeding in
severity any that we have yet had,
and which will he followed by the
submergence of one or more of these
islands.

Maine was the pioneer in the fight
against tlie evils of intemperance, by
means of prohibition. Neal Dow suc
ceeded in getting a law through the
Legislature as long ago as 1851 forbid
ding the sale of spirituous liquoTs with
in the borders of the State, and for
thirty-six years Maine has been nomi
nally governed under that law.That it
was not enforced has been well known,
but Governor Bodwell is the first
ruler of the State who has confirmed
the fact. He says: “I am trying to
enforce prohibition in Maine, hut i
find it is the biggest job that I ever
undertook in my life. The law is fair
ly well enforced in the mral districts
and receives the support of the com
munity, but in the larger cities and
towns it is impossible to enforce it, as
the liquor men defy it and, in many 1
