Hamilton operated upon a jiatient who -urvived the excision 20 tears, and an other palient of Ids. whose breast was en tirely lemoved. survived the operation for 10 years. He be lieves that its origin is local, and is there fore removable, and that the constitution becomes affected only secondarily by a nore or less widespread dissemination of original cancer germs. The failure of one excision to affect a cure in no wise disconcerts him. The disease is insidious, ind a careful microscopic examination is necessary to follow its various ramifica tions. Where the growth is not in prox imity to the vital organs, operation after operation may lx* tried with impunity. In the case of Gen. Grant, the entire throat was affected and an operation meant certain death, otherwise an opera tion would have been tried. It is an ex ception for more than one member of a family to become tlie victim of cancer. In fact it may lx* confidently said that no human Ix-ing can lx- sure of escaping the disease until lie lias passed the age of its occurrence, which is when his vital ugi- enincry is entirely worn out. It is known that a Capt. Ranard and others have been able to navigate the fir when there was not much wind blowing. But the full results of the hxperiments have been a well kept military fee ret. Yet every \ generous minded person lias felt under a i moral obligation to fee tlie porter because lie knew that the porter’s employers gave him so small wages that unless the passen gers came to his rescue he would be shame fully underpaid. The Wisconsin Central Railroad company lias just announced a new departure in this matter. It has decided to increase tlie pay of tlie porters and waiters employed on its sleeping and dining ears to an amount which will give them ample compensation for their work and pro’.iibit them from receiving “tips’* from passengers. Orders have been issued to them to receive no money from any passenger except for blacking shoes, “when requested” to do so, for which service 1 hey are permitted to accept ten cents.
