The Emperor is en titled to seven “legal” and an unlimi ted number of illegal” concubines. If, however, one of the latter give birth to a son, her status is legitimat ed, and she becomes a “Princess of the Blood./ and associated to the for tunes of her child, who may one day ascend the thrown.
