Hall given by the young men of the town, on Tuesday night, was a nice afllair, and very much enjoyed and well at tended, considering the Inclement weather. J. M. Pollaty has removed his stock of goods to the store on the corner of Montgomery street. The building has been repainted and improved so much that it is scarcely recognizable, and adds greatly to the beauty of the town. The public school closed here a week ago, and consequently the academy is now filled to overflowing with all the children going there. Courtney of the Pleasant Cross neighborhood has been quite sick with pneumonia, but is now much better.—Edycfield Monitor. Miss Hettie Hutson, of Barnwell, who tias been spending some time with her nephew Mr. \V. M. Hutson, left yesterday for MePhersonville. The enclosed parks on Park Avenue present a strikingly att Tractive appear ance already, and in a year or two will constitute lovely ornaments to the most beautiful town in the (south. The Itev. Dr. E. M. Butler formerly pastor of Christ Church, Washington, and a professor iu the Episcopal Theo logical Seminary, is stopping ut the Highland Park Hotel accompanied by his wife. The Abbeville MexHcnger says: Hon. J I). 8. Henderson, of Aiken, was in at tendance upon Court last week. We heard him make one of the finest le gal arguments we have ever heard in our Court House. School Commissioner [ . W. Williams and Col. C. E. It. Drayton, and the audience was then addressed first by Mr. Edgertou, next by Col. Drayton, and then by Mr. Cuthbert in a man ner appropriate to the day and its sur roundings. A collection was taken up for an addition to the school house, which is tile property of the town, under the direction of a Board of Trustees, and one hundred and thirty-five dollars subscribed. Lumber and other ma terial are already on the ground to the value of nearly one hundred dollars, and the following committee of ladies was organized, who arc to arrange for a festival in aid of the proposed im provement: Mrs. Chas. E It. Dray ton, Mrs. H. B. Burckhalter, Mrs. John Moseley,Mrs. J. P. Weathersbee, Mrs. C. K. Henderson, Mrs. John Staubes, Mrs. Delevan Yates, Mrs. McCarter, Mrs. I). W. 8egler, Miss Campbell and Mias Laura Pa due. The following committee of gentle men were organized as a building ccmmittee: Intendaut E. Sommer, Col. C. E. R. Drayton, Dr. S. H. Chapin, Messrs. J. T. Gaston, L. C. Ligon, John Staubes, A. J. Burck halter and School Commissioner L. W. Williams. The school has outgrown the ca pacity of t'ne building and there evi dently exists on the part of our citizens a determination to encourage Mr. Mack and bis faithful associates by making such improvements as will meet the necessities of the case until provisions are made to erect a school house in keeping with the beauty and reputation of our town. Mr. J. R. Mack and his associates, Mrs. Mack and Miss Eunice Browne, | have reason to feel gratified at tiie | sylendid success of the exhibition, as | evinced by these striking evidences of j interest and approval by the patrons of the institution.
