In an article of this length. Boys devote
themselves to kite Hying in the spring
mouths, when the winds prevail. Thcitf
are singing and whistling kites in the
shape of birds, animals and men. Men
‘even spend days flying monster kites so
large that it takes u stout rope to hold
them. Boys also spin tops, play soldier,
wrestle and practice at all kinds of athletic
.exercises. The fifth days of the fifth
mouths of each year are boy’s festival
days, on which the younger sons of the
family have presents of flags decorated
with representations of the daring deeds
of the great men of the country, and espe
cially of those of their ancestors who have
been noted for bravery or wisdom.
On this day and for weeks afterward
the whole country presents a strange ap
pearance. Every house that has hoys in
the family erects a flagstr.fi to which a
large cloth fish is suspended. Some of
these are thirty or forty feet in length,
and when they are inflated hy the breeze
look like a fish swimming iu the water.
These fish flags represent the carp, which
has the reputation of being the most
active, daring and persistent of all fish.
These are qualities which hoy-? are taught
to emulate. Girls play battledore and
j terfereuce from, often even with the
j active co-operation of, the parent.
