Rud of n Triple Murderer, Preston Valentine, alias Pierce Wingfield, colored, convicted of tin murder of Mr. William Vales, night watchman of the Augusta, (la., street car stables, on the night of Septembei 21st, 1884, was hung in the Augusta Jail yard on Friday Ja-t. During his c.mdneuient Valentine confessed that in 1876. while a resident of Kdgutield. 8. C., he murdered a woman named Nancy Harhy. He also murdered a boy in Kdgefh ld county in 1875, and the murder of Mr. Vales made him thrice a murderer. The execution was a bungling affair, as the r<»pe, be ing too long, caught under ids elbow for alstut a half minute. JVetcs and Courier. Three old gentlemen met on Broad street a day or two ago and congratu lated each other. Their meeting de veloped the fact that their combined ages uuiiitiered 278 years. They were Mr. John Klink, DO years of age; Mr H. A. Middleton, and Mr. John 8 Bird, 94. All of the gentlemen were well and lie rty, and wqfe’themselves struck with the fact that their meet ing was a striking proof of the fact that there is no place like Charles ton. Not Exactly a Paradise. Edgefield Advertiser: Mr. J. B. Daniels writes us as follows from Birmingham, Ala.: “We are looking for the Knights of Labor and all other workmen to strike at any time. The town is full of all kinds of laborers, and hundred* of them have nothing to do and have to go back home. It is a sad sight to see some of them begging for something to cat.
