The Empire Well Augur Co. of Ithaca, New York have written Mr. L. C. Ligon, .Secretary of the com- j inittee on Water-works, to say that they will dig an artesian well 1003 ft. deep for $2-503 and guarantee 75003 gallons of water per day. The general manager T. P. Rust says that he feels confident that twice that amount will be obtained but that he will not guarantee more than 75000 gallons. It is to he hoped that our citizens will generally attend tiie meetingonThurs- day afternoon where the whole matter will he discussed. He says he is now convinced that Aiken is the best place iu the worjd and here he expects to live and die. He seemed especially to appreciate the kindness of the ladies in watching his goods during the progress of the fire, and taking it all in all, Mr. Hahn in spite of his financial loss, is about the best pleased man we have s -en lately. First, Seetelary of State: Second, Secretary of the Treasury: Third, Secretary of War: Fourth. Attorney General: and then the Postmaster General, Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of the Interior. Consequently, official society is agita ted over t he question of social prece dence. Who shall ride first, walk first, talk first, call first, and sit nearest the distinguished host, the Senator’s wife, or the Cabinet officer’s wife? It is a matter that could not be settled by haphazard concessions and so it has been suggested to the ladies that the eldest be allowed to go first.
