The pastoral letter issued by the House of Bishops of the Protestant Episcopal Church at the close of the at Chicago has been or will be read ii all the churches of that coiiiinuuioi> throughout the United States. Its principal subject is that of the Chris tian household as the unit of socia: organization and the basis of public virtue and security, connected with j which is the subject of moral and re- ! hgous education ahd the unity am* j brotherhood of mankind within tin church. One of the leading portions of this eloquent pastoral is of general interest and is printed below. That household religion and mo rality have chang-ed, and are stili changing for the worse, is recognized by all Christian people as one of th* dark omens of the time. The causes are not far to seek. Two theories, starting from opposite premises, hut both alike the product of the anti Christian and secular tendency of the day, have been eating like a moth ant rust into the domestic conscience, and thus sapping the very foundations of home life. The one theory declares the individual to be the supreme unit of society, and so demands for every in dividual complete and equal freedom. It aflii'ins alldiscriminalinglegislation based upon differences of sex to b< degrading and tyrannical. It teaclie; that, as the only ground of marriagt is the consent of the contracting par ties, so the continuance of marriage is rightfully dependent on the contin uance of mutual agreement. Ii; de dares that any other view of marriage converts it into the worse bondage known to our law-. Admitting n< powerorprivileges or disability in on< sex not common to the other, and timing for woman an absolute con- .ovel? her patrimony and acquisi tions, as well as over her person, i’ does not hesitate tti affirm as one of its ultimate dogmas that there is “n< more reason why the woman shonld take her husband’s name in marriage- than why he should take hers.” Thus the Christian law of the hnushold is not only disparaged, but denounced as a degradation of woman and a social tyranny. The other theory—an outgrowth o! a school poliiical ecoinomy rather than of any settled philosophy of social life — starts from tin rttdlcally opposite principle o’ the subordination' of the individual to thef S'ate, and insists upon a modern equivalent to the Pagan doctrine formulated by the specula tions of Plato, which place marriage absolutely under the sanction and supervisioi. of the State. Both theories substitute the idea of contract for tha; of moral law as is embodied in a solemn covenant, the former turning upon the freedom of the contracting parties to define and limit obligation; the latter upoi) the inherent subject matter of the agreement as defining the duty and prescribing the duration of the covenant. Both theories en courage an unlimited facility of di vorce. Both theories loosen the liga ments and corrupt the inmost fibres of home life by robbing it ofitsrelig- ous sanction. Hcperation in any form should he regarded, and is regarded, by the church, as a last and di’cadlq! expedient, only to be justified by the gravest considerations, and, as it were, conceded to the unfortunate beings whose position constrains the grant of such relief. But no seper- ation carries with it the right to seek another alliance; nor, except in one case, can a subsequent marriage he permitted. After parties have been lawfully joined together according to the will of God, divorce wi ll permis sion to marry again is not conceded by the church, unless the ground of divorce he adultery, and in that case the guilty party is absolutely excluded from marrying again during the life time of the other, and to the innocent party only is permission conceded to contract another marriage. Prof. Woodrow’s Case. Savannah Xcu'i. The A lahama Synod of the Presbyte- j rian Church, now in session at Talla dega, has almost unanimously adopted the resolutions condemning Hr. Wood- row's theories, and favoring a meeting of the trustees of the seminary at Columbia, S. C., to receive his resig nation or to expel him from his pro fessorship. The synod at .Sparta, in this State, Thursday, passed similar resolutions. It looks as ifi)r. Wood- row would have to go. The Charleston Dispatch says that John W. Cromwell, a colored journal ist of Philadelphia, has been investi gating the pecuniary status of the col ored people of the United States. He says, in South Carolina the negroes >wn *10,000,000 worth of property, fit Charleston fourteen men repre sent $200,000. Thomas R. Small is worth $18,000, and Charles C. Leslie is worth $12,000.
