During Court week tte sincerely
trust that our subscribers will reuiem-
sr their dues to this Oflice. The
imouuts though small to each indi
vidual subscriber are very large
Ju the aggregate to us.
We seldom call attention to these
matters iu our columns, preforing to
send out regular statements, under
cover by mail to each subscriber.
Hut as so many delinquents are on
our books, and as it takes a great deal
»of money to run a newspaper we must
earnestly urge a prompt settlement of
all ccouuts.
At the approaching term or* Court
the following important case yill be
tried, in which a long array of able
counsel are engaged. The case is
entitled the Atlantic, Western & Nar
row Gauge liailroad, versus the Au
gusta, Edgefield 6c Newberry Narrow
Guage Railroad. These roads cross
each other in eleven places in an area
of ten miles in Aiken County. The
question at issue is who is eptitled to
the rigiit ofaway. Roth roads are now
enjoined from work by order of Judge
Aldrich. The ease will be tried before
Judge Witherspoon, and involves the
existence of one or the other of the
roads. The counsel for the plaintiff
are Messrs. Weils, Orr, and Morgan of
^reenville, and M. L. Bonham, of
kbbeville. For defendants, Hender-
>n Bros., of Aiken, and W. TGary, of
i Augusta.

begin to think where would they have
stood had it been the end of time, and
are trying to do better. We think
tho earthquake did more for the
churches than the preachers could do
in a whole year. One who had not
been to church in a long while prom
ised God that if she was spared untiil
the next day she would join the
church and she kept her word. A
great many have confessed that it was
the earthquake that put them to think

talk.
On the first Sunday in this month
Rev. T)r. Pelzer preached us a ser
mon at Red Branch from these words,
‘•1 am the vine, ye are the branches,”
lie surely make a good impression on
his congregation, he is going to he

hope to have him with us many times
in the future,
Last Sunday the Lev-els candidates
for baptism were baptised. Two
of our Sunday-School scholars were
among them, Misses Leela and Laura
Brown. Several more of our school
joined tiie Montmoreuci Church, I
don’t know how many.
I will say in conclusion that I hope
that the earthquake did as much to
ward moralizing the people in other
parts of the country as it did hero.

A High Premium.
It speaks well for the credit of our
local institutions that within the last
few days, a block of the stock of one
of our leading Savings Banks sold at
the high premium of 150, its par value
being 100. We allude to the stock of
the Augusta Savings Bank, the inter
ests of which have always been most
closely guarded, and which is perhaps
one oi the most prosperously managed
banks in the South. Besides a paid
up capital stock, which is invested in
City of Augusta Bonds, and a large
and steadily accumulating surplus,
the stockholders of this Bank are in
dividually liable, and depositors can
feel that their money is secure beyond
a doubt. Parties .who want to save
their means for a good investment, or
persons who want to get interest ou
money, cannot put it to a better use
an i advantage than by depo- t ngBit
v ith theAugusta Savings Bank,which
pays five per cent interest which
it compounds semi-annually. Be
sides its admirable officers, the
Finance Committee of the Bank is
composed of Mr. E. J. O’Conner,
Chairman, Messrs. W. B. Young ana
E. R. Derry, and no more efficient com
iniitee can be found. We doubt if the
stock of any Savings Institution in
tiie South is at a higher premium than
;>ur own Augusta Savings Bank.—
