The earthquake shocks are still oc-
curring.here,although they seem lesser
iu force each time they appear. Very
little damage was done here beyond
friglitning everyone, shaking " the
bricks oil of chimneys, and cracking
the Canal dam in several places,
which has since been attended to. We
have many things to be thankful for
that we all have sufl’ered no worse
calamities.
Two of our oldest citizen have died
the past week. Mr. Petty and Mrs.
Kadle. They have been great suffer
ers, and were aged respectively 73
and 82 years old.
Mr. J. T. Woodward lost a little girl
three years old on Saturday llth hist.,
This is the sec
ond little one in a year that has died.
Tiie family have the sympathies of all
in their bereavement.
Joseph T. Baker and Miss Amanda
Padgett were married on Wednesday,
.September 1st, at the residence of the
bride’s parents, by Rev. W. Ii.
Wroten. The congratulations of
many friends are extended to this
happy pair.
Miss Mary Reardon, Misses Etta
and Lizzie Semi, Minnie Berry and
Mrs. B. W. Hard, have returned from
Greenville and other places after a
pleasant sojourn.
The mad dug scare was on us on
Saturday llth inst. A strange dog
came iu town, and appeared to be af
fected with the rabies, as it had fights
and bit other dogs. It was finally
hunted down, and killed by Mr. Jas.
Edwards, Jr. Then commenced a
wholesale slaughter of all the dogs
that had been bitten, and I am pleas
ed to state, that all danger from that
source is now over with.

On last Saturday the protracted
meeting at the Moutmorenci Church
commenced, and was conducted by
the pastor Rev. W. L. Baggott, assis
ted by the Rev. D. M. Ramsey; there
was a great revival. During the
meeting forty-five additions were
made to the church. Mr. Ramsey is
an able preacher, and it is owing to
Ins ardent prayers, accompanied by
full explanations of all points pertain-’
iug to the human soul that caused so
many to take up the ’‘cross.” The
meeting lasted until Wednesday even
ing when it whs concluded. Thurs
day morning at 10 a. in., all repaired

Sec. 1.—Be it ordained by the In-
tendant and Wardens of the Town of
Aiken in council assembled and by
authority of same. That the Clerk
and Treasurer of said Town be, and
he is hereby authorized and enpower-
ed to levy and collect annually the
regular tax of one-fourth of one per
cent, upon every dollar’s worth of real
and personal property within the cor- ! £
porate limits of said Town.
See. II.—Also, a tax of one-eighth j
of one per cent, upon all gross sales of
merchandise, income from professions
factorage and faculties.
Bee. III.—Also, a tax of twenty-five
per cent, upon the regular corporation
tax of each tax-payer within said
Town. This tax ‘shall be levied and
collected annually for five years, and
the same shall be held by the Trsasur- i
er as a special fund, separate and dis
tinct from the regular tax and shall
be expended for the improvement of
the said Town.
Bee IV.—That the tax duplicate of
said Town for the collection of the
aforesaid taxes, sliall open at the of
fice of the Clerk and Treasurer each
and every year hereafter,from the 15th
day of August, and remain open until
1 the 1st day of November thereafter,
! without penalty, and all who are then
