Jlaptisms at Aiken ami Churches. Town Creek On last Sunday night, the Rev. Lu ffiiua Cttthbert baptized eleven at the Baptist Church. Others were iltted by letter and restoration ting 18 in all. On Sunday last a large congregation assembled at the Baptist Church, in- c'uding many of other denominations. A collection was taken up in aid of Charleston which realized the hand some sum of $82.80. In the afternoon the Sunday-school contributed $20. making for this Church $102.80 in all. THOR PIT, Treasurer Fund. The Citizen’s order this evening at the Conn by W. O- Davis, Esq. *On motion, Col. C. E. R. Drayton was called to the Chair,'and Mr. G. W. E. Thorpe requested to act a- Secre tary. Mr. D. S. Henderson moved ’‘that the nomination of Imendant and Wardens take place, and that when the ticket be voted it be for the in- tendant and Wardens together.”- He said it would save much time. Mr. O. E. Sawyer inquired by what authority this meeting was called, and bv what right had Council to issue a notice* calling this meeting. He declared it was clearly illegal to have this meeting take place, and he would not enter it nor abide by it. It was nothing but the meeting of a band of politicians Mr. I). S. Henderson, declared that it was a called meeting of citizens. All had a right to be here. It was called by the Council to invite them together and not to dictate. It had been a custom dating several years back, and the proceedings were just the same as now, aud whenever he had gone into these meetings he ha-1 stood by the ticket nominated, and lie proposed to do so now. These meet- imrs were held to keep down party strife in our town elections. Mr. C. E. Sawyer reiterated his for mer statements and then moved to adjourn. Overwhelmingly rejected. * E. J. Dickerson moved to amend Mr. Henderson’s motion with the fol lowing: ‘ That the two colored men receiving the highest number ol votes he declared the nominees.” Mr Henderson accepted the amend ment, aud as amended the motion was adopted. W. Q. Davis Esq. said, he claimed a right to vote and not to dictate any ticket. It whs only for the citizens themselves to determine whom they shall support,and in this meeting (oo. It was composed of representative men of all shades, opinions and inter ests. No one that he knew of desired to act arbitrary or unfairly. In an eloquent maimer he then nominated Mr. F. E. Sommer, for Intendant, E. J. Dickerson seconded Mr. Sommer’s nomination. Mr. John T. Gaston here said, that this meeting was not legal. The time had past, for tiie meeting had been postponed. He gave notice that he should no/' enter, nor abide by* the de cision of this meeting. Mr. Alts, moved that nominations for Intendant close. Adopted. Mr. D. S. Henderson moved “That Mr. F. E. Sommer, be nominated by acclamation. Adopted. The Chairman then announced Mr. Sommer the nominee for Intendant. Mr. Schroder moved “To proceed, with the nominations for Wardens. Adopted. The following were nominated: F P Crum, J L Courtney, J G. Phillips, W J Moseley*, H F Warneke, Henry Busch, Henry Schroder, Alex Williams. Mr. Henderson moved “To close the nominations, and that the voting be by ballot, and that three managers be appointed by the Chairman to con duct the election. Adopted. The Chair appointed Messrs. F. W. Clay, Wm. Turnbull and E. J. Dick erson. After the votes were counted the managers reported the following War dens elected: H F Warneke, Henry Schroder, Henry Busch, J L Courtney, J G Phillips, F P Crum. The Graniteville mill dams are all safe and the town is all right, and the mill working on full time. The same is trife of Vaucluse. We have been obliged to omit a large numberof communications in conse quence of our crowded columns. We will do the best we can next week. Thirty shocks were felt in Aiken up to Thursday night since then the count has been lost, but the whole number would probably reach in the neighborhood of forty. On Monday last we received a visit from that whole-souled gentleman and true democrat, Mr. C, H. Goodwin, of Beech Island. That the Clerk and Treasurer of said Town be, and he is hereby authorized and enpower ed to levy and collect annually the regular tax of one-fourth of one per cent, upon every dollar’s worth of real and personal property within the cor porate limits of said Town. Sec. II.—Also, a tax of one-eighth of one per cent, upon all gross sales ol merchandise, income from professions factorage and faculties. Sec. III.—Also, a tax of twenty-five per cent, upon the regular corporation tax of each tax-payer within said Town. This tax shall be levied and collected annually for five years, and the same shall be heldb3 r the Treasur er as a special fund, seperate and dis tinct from the regular tax and shall be expended for the improvement of the said Town. Sec IV.—That the tax duplicate of said Town for the collection of tiie aforesaid taxes, shall open at the of fice of the Clerk and Treasurer each and every year hereafter,from the 15th day of August, and remain open until the 1st day of November thereafter, without penalty, and all who are then in default will be proceeded against as provided by ordinance dated July 20th, A.
