Summerville Herald. j The average member of the Legisla ture just adjourned was a quaint and | curious character. He is—speaking in the present tense—an anomaly in na- ‘ ture. He is a dime-museum freak, a monstrosity, a foible, a failure, a f.and. The only consblation in re-, i ^phool,. a few miles below viewing his brief and w hoopla career i is the fact .exhibited every day of his j utter incapacity to ii o'harm. It le supported partly by individual sub vurvATE—|— 4 ri i \ | i >0^ Bearding-hlluse !< _L O ( )OiJ 11 the beet people of that section. In the neighborhood there Is a white wo- mau married to a well-to-do Tenter named Smith, who claims to be a Spaniard, but is regarded and treated *W9’»toU-t»looded negro, having every upptarance of beiiig one. Before lier inarrikge to Smith the woman was a ■tfldo*TlufThad a numlier of thhdren who are ptire wliite. These children, inal that he personated did he exhibit those capacities al >ng with the mtfsq^e, except when the law-maker passed as a donkey; then his failure to understand showed, to tin most casual observer, more of nature than acting. Many of our Soions, who didn’t know the tliflerenee between the plan of Salvation and the previous ques- however, regard Smith us their father Mon, or who couldn’t tell the differ and are called by his name. Lust week 1 ohm of them, ia boy fourteen, was sent to Mr. Ewart's school. He promptly objected to the attendance of the boy, ’and rejiorted the case to the trustees, J. J. Mackey, John P. Cruggs and A. It. Smith. A number of patrons ol Ijie kCjiooi gavp Upljce {.hat if the ISmith boy attended' it they would withdraw their chihjjbn.’ On Friday the trustees‘in6t ati^l unanimously de- fji^od to dismiss the boy. The com munity sustains Mr. Ewart and the trustees, hut the Smiths are indignant and declare their purpose to prosecute the teacher and the trustees in the L T pited l^tatcs Court under the civil fj^&^Iaw. But it is dittlcult to see haw such a prosecution could be had, as the boy was not discriminated against because of his race, color or previous cqqclition, biiing a full-blood- dd white, and was objected to because of the social position of his parents. The case is without precedent so far sis is known. A FHESIDEXrH ANCESTOR. Hanged,Drawnami Quartered In lOGO for itcKieidr. President Harrison’s great-great* g.-andfather, who was one of the regi- c'des of Charles I., says Ben: Perley Poor, was convicted of high treason? Pepya, in his diarv, Oct, 13, IMJO, re fers in tills comforting way to his ex ecution: “I wept to the Charing UWnfc'tb ste 5J.aj'.-Gen.jHarrison hang- eel, draWii a fid quartered, which was done there, and lie looked as cheerful as any man could do in that condi tion.” Exactly 116 years after this event, Benjamin Harrison, the father of trdridoiit Harrison and the great- grundsmi of the good man who de parted this life in such a gentleman like manner, according to pepys, had just signed the Declaration of lude- endeuce In Philadelphia. His 'ht was nearly 300 ponuds, while ence between a deed and a mortgage, were thoroughly posted on the legal form of free passes, and could writ* one off at si momeiit r s notice if awak ened at midnight. Horae of our law-makers from some of theT.i,ek counties, could not read or sign then own names, so it is said Still, after being in Columbia several w^eks, they could read readily, and at a distance, such signs as “Beer l cents,” “Good OM Bye Kept Here ’ So that going to Columbia helped them, if not their constituents. It is also claimed by several win were present that a fight took place, in one of the committee rooms, after adjournment, between a Senator and a Representative, over a dispute as ti whether “a half-grown nigger and a b.*armadea track exactly alike.” The Senator argued for the b_»ar, or that the tracks were alike, which the Rep resentative said lie “would be d—n el dey wnz.” At this point bowie- knives were drawn and tile combat ants were "operated. The yh.rQliii^ Sjiartan contrasts the poverty made apparent in Greenville city by the late cold weather, with that of Spartanburg, intimates that the liquor business of Greenville did not sceih'to make that city as pros perous as it may l>e. It seems to us a waate-of tin\p to try t.ud convince peo- that liquor shops make tlie'poor man poorer. It is the man who lives on 4aily wages, whittled down to the lowest point, that suffers most from the saloon. His one or two or three drinks per day makes all the differ ence between living in moderate corn- tort and existing in such a hand to mouth style that a week’s Inclement weather will put him on the parish. People are often poor without any aid in that direction from the saloon, but that blightingjnstitution never fails to add poverty and misery. Every dime (Missed over the liar is that much ab solutely thrown away as far as the original owner is concerned. According to an exchange President Cleveland dresses well. His usual suit is one of black broadcloth, witii the coat double breasted and tightly buttoned about the body. He wears good boots, and these al way's shine brighter than those of any of his call ers. His linen is always white and j ls£ ■ B he puts on a turnover collar every | day. His favorite necktie is one of DiclULOIlds ! black, very quiet and modest in its tie. The President ties it himself, and he does not require the assistance of a valet in making his toilet. He wears a moustache which is rather heavy and a brown color. The rest of his face he shaves with his own hands every morning. President Arthur had his own barber conic to the White Houseaud shave him.
