A)t4?riU>i IntelHyefirrr. \ A most at ropioits outrage was com mitted on Mr. I/. Gray’s plantation last Thursday night. A party *»f f«*u men went t«* the house of a colored iiian named John 1 teed, who is a ten ant of Mr. B. 1^. Gray’s, and hr**: e into his house, liunting for him,for tin avowed purpose <»f ki.ling him. For tuuulely he was ppt at home, and the assailants hdd to content themselves with running his 'n’ife and children out of do<>>.f in their night clothes. From Bewd’fi house the hand went to the hous^if James R. Hjx, a white tenant mi Gray’s place, ami called foi him. Hix raised his window, and immediately one or more shots were fired, one of which struck and imbed tie*I itself in the window sill, just be low Htx’s body. An elevation of a few inches would have killed him. Ffix, of course, immediately shut his widovy, and the party, fearing detec tion or for some other cause, left his housp, and as they passed the road in froqt «f Gray's ftred 41 his house, the shot striking the roof, which is low. On Friday warrants were issued by Trial Justice Featherstonu for Jaiqes Bowen, a son of Mr. W. J. Bowen. — Elrod, ami tvyq young ineq of the name of Moorehead, from Mart poun- r v, Ga., one of whom is a son-in-law of Mr. Bqwen. 411 of tlie p»rtius ac cused of these out rages are white, and none of them can he found in the county, .except Elrod, who was ar rested, and, after a preliminary ex amination, was committed to jail in default of hail to await Ills trial in the Circuit Court. Of course we do not wish to express any opinion as lo the guilt or innocence of the parties ac cused of tliis outrage, but we must, in the most eniphujic maimer, denounce tbe perpetration of these uqtrages, and insist that the guilty parties, if possi ble, be ferreted out and punished to lie fullest extent of the law. Such a state of society should not for one instant be tolerated in Anderson coun ty. The peace and good order of our county is endangered, as well as the iives of the persons thus attacked, by such outrages. A resume of Armstrong’s testimony has been given to the press by a gentleman ppnnectod with tin- trial. The clergyman’s statement gives thp wjfole story of his life, and touched upon other charges brought against him. one of whicl) was that while drunk he delivered a Sunday- school lecture iu Virginia. Two wit- nessess testified that this was a fact but Mr. Armstrong swears such was not the ease, and that the witnesses' evidence was false. He said he was not intoxicated whjle in Cincin- jpti, but admitted drinking beer wi.h uinuer, and also admitted visiting houses of ill-repute, bi^t says lie did so on a Godly mission, in the endeav or to save a lost soul.
