As her own gentle ministries.

Her voice is full of charm and praoe,

In winter, when the days are cold.

How well she keeps her little fold.
How shines the lire beside her chair.

A PHOTOGRAPHIC DISCOVERY.
An interesting and useful discovery
Jins, it is said, been recently made by two
FreunhFvhotographic artists, who have
'USm'feW their allg&gLfr.
means for bringing photography nearer
•perfection than it is at present One de
fect which has hitherto somewhat de
tracted from the exactitude of photo
graphic reproductions concerns colors.
As is well-known to everybody, aligfit
color—like yellow, for instance—comes
out a good many shades darker in a pho
tograph, while a dark one, such as blue,
comes out much lighter. This is partic
ularly noticeable in photographs of paint
ings, especially when scenery or colored
hangings or stuffs are reproduced, and
to remedy the defect a good deal of time
is spent in touching up such photographs.
By the new method it is stated there will
no longer be anything left to be desired
in this respect, for yellow will not appear
too dark nor blue too light The metal
plates used are prepared with a solution
of gelatino-bromide, a simple expedient
that does not increase the cost and
which has been shown by repeated ex
periments to answer completely the pur
pose in view. Artists, who have fre
quently complained of photographic in
accuracy in the matter of colors, will bo
the first to appreciate the advantages of
the new discovery, if it is as satisfactory
in its results ns it Is described.

E. J. C. WOOD,
SIBERIA OTT.
James Stevenson, of the Geological
Survey, has reported the discovery of
several more ruined cave and cliff cities. ringprol>ertv again8t lire
The most remarkable one is a village of 0 f unsurpassed reputu
sixty-five underground dwellings near
the summit of a volcanic foot hill in the
Ban Juan region of Aiizona. The dwell
ings were excavated after a common pat
tern. They had no interior communica
tion beneath the surface, and were ac
cessible by means of square holes leading
from the surface by a vertical shaft to the
floor of the main room of the dwelling,
foot-rests forming a ladder.
Considerable debris was found in these
fincient dwellings, an examination of
which l<?d to the discovery of many curi
ous illnstrating some of the social and do
mestic customs of the extinct race. Stone
mauls and axas, the implements used in
excavating the dwellings; pottery bear
ing a great variety ornamentation ; bone
awls and needles of delicate workman-
sliip; the metate, or family grinding-
stone, for grain, its well-worn surface in
dicating long use ; shell and obsidian or
naments and implements of wood, were
among the trophies. There were signs of
intercommunication between this village
and a dift" city some fifteen miles distant,
pi so a new discovery, which indicated the
contemporaneous inhabitancy of the two.
.This city, or rather, cluster of villages,
occupied the sides of a canyon, which
has been christened Walnut Canyon.
Notliiug indicating the use of metallic
tools of any description was discovered.
The surface of the wood of which the
whirl was formed 1ml apparently been
charred and then ground down to the re
quired size and shape by rubbing it upon
sandstone^—a shaft or reed similar to bam
boo, a species entirely unknown in that
region.

One evening, about dusk, says an ex
change, a Texas gentleman of a scientific
turn of mind was sitting on his front
gallery, when his attention was called on
an extraordinary meteorological conca
tenation, ns circus men say. A peculiar
shaped cloud seemed to reach down from
the sky and draw itself up again, very !
much after the manner of those cyclonic
clouds in Iowa. The gentleman was
very much interested in this meteorolo
gical perhubatiou, when it occurred to
him that the peculiar cloud of water-spout
might be nearer than the distant horizon, j
Ho took off his hat and found that Ilia 1
surmise was correct Fastened to the
rim of the hat by his hind claws was a j
beautiful centipede about nine inches
long. The peculiar phenomenon was
produced by the insect drawing himself j
up and letting himself down in his efforts 1
to find a nose or some other feature to
hang on to in order to facilitate
scent As the gentleman had a short
nose the insect was foiled. It died
shortly afterward by the gentleman acci
dentally stepping on it about half a dozen
times with the heel of his boot
