the Revolution William Henry Dray
ton had been one of the king’s coun
sellors and one of the judges of the
province, and after it lie was made
Chief Justice by hia countrymen, who
heaped honors of all kinds upon him
recognition of his distinguished
services—one of the latter being a
mission to the disaffected people of
the back-country, which, in connec-
lion with the Rev. William Tennant,
he undertook and carried out with
success in 1776. He left two volnmes
of memoirs, which were edited by his
son, John Drayton, afterwards Gov-
ervor of South Carolina, and which
contain accounts of many interesting
and important events of the Revolu
tion. He designed one side of the
arms and seal of South Carolina, the
other side having been contributed by
Arthur Middleton, a signer of the
Declaration of Independence j and he
