cultivate the crop, but waited until
the middle or last of June and planted
cow-peas in drills two feet apart, cov
ering with a Thomas harrow. The
land was broken broad-cast and plan
ted flat, harrowed before as well as
after planting. That is ail the work 1
did. No after-cultivation whatever.
I never saw a more luxuriant growth
of vines, hardly a weed or sprig of
grass anywhere. The vines covered
the entire surface of the ground, and
one who did not know would have
said that the peas were sown broad
cast. I had just as good vjnes as if I
had sown broadcast, and besides saved
considerable seed,
very rank that
down, and it was impossible to cut
the entire crop with a mower. Hence
a vast quantity was left in the field.

few clay’ peas mixed in with them.
The present year this has been the
dryest piece of land on the place and
us mellow as an ash heap. I never
saw sucii a transformation in my life.
The land broke up loose and there was
hardly a clod—none 1 am certain but
could have been easily ground into
powder by the lightest kind of harrow.
The pea roots penetrating to a very
great deptli in the soil opened up a
way for the surface water escaped
quickly and thoroughly. This land
now is planted to dwarf beans ami
