The following is a brief Biographical
nketch of the famous sculptor wlio be
gan his career as an artist in Char
leston.
Clark Mills was born in Onondaga
County, New York, December 1. islo.
He lost his parents in childhood and
learned the trade of a plasterer, which
he carried on for nine years in this Harrigal, J G
city. He early displayed talent as a' l£j tc h7,, ( ,’ g 1*
sculptor, and in 1S48 he made a marble j ,, , . m
bust of Calhoun, which was bought by j Card we!I, John, M I)
the City Council, and which stiii | Couch, w E

task. In October, 1S'>2, he succeeded
in producing a perfect cast, and the [Morgan
statue was set up in Washington on
January 8, 18.)3, the 38th anniversary
of the liattlo of New Orleans. It was

Congress rewarded him by an appro
priation of $20,000. He also made the
e.olossal equestrian statue of Washing
ton for which lie received .$50,000, and
in 18()3 he finished the colossal statue
of Liberty which crowns the dome of
the Capitol at Washington.
