will probably result In death. No one
regrets the occurrence more sincerely
than Mr. Allen.

A Good Change.
Beginning Sunday, 9th inst, the day |
passenger train on the South Carolina
Railroad will leave Augusta every
Sunday at 8 a. m., and Charleston
at h:0-’> a. in. This change is made for j
the benefit of those who wish to spend
Sunday in Aiken, or other points
along the road, and do not wish to get
up as early as the train has been leav
ing heretofore. The new schedule will
be a great convenience to a number of
people.
! heard tlu utterance, as it
j was rna'li* in close proximity to him.
t The speaker was a Northern man who
has been visiting Aiken for ten or
twelve years, and has been very kind
ly n ceived by our citizens. Said this
Ida k-hearted white skin, addressing
a group: “Why I have been studying
the people down in this country for
twelve years past, and know them
well. Youseethat negro there ? (poin-
ing to Gen. Prince Rivers, who is as
black as a crow, and was sitting on a
carriage-box near by, and who is one
! of the sable pets at the Park Hotel.)
Why he is as far above the Southern
people as we are above the negro. Why
! they fawn around the Northern peo
ple! You cannot treat them kindly;
the more you kick the more they fawn
around you.”
All we have to say to tliisunw
specimen of the American, is that
heart and mind are a disgrace to his
white skin. His brutal instincts have
made him mistake politeness for
fawning; and we politely invite him
to stop on the Main street of Aiken
and repeat his malignant and insult-
! ing remarks in the presence of any
Southern white man, and he will soon
i find out whether he will he fawned on
or whether he will reeieve a good
kicking and a horse-whipping to boot.
Base, malignant, purse-proud scoun
drel—disgrace to the Caucasian race—
. have a care or we will publish your
! name, and then Aiken will he too hot
to hold you. As it is you are well
l known, and your brutish nature shall
! have no further cause for complaint of
, our pc litencss.

Singular ami High llumlec! Act.
On Thursday last t wo men from
Augusta, one of m horn is said to he
named Sam Hackle, drove up to one
of Air. John Dicks’ fields, about four
miles from Ellenton, and stated that
they had a MTirrant for the arrest of a
negro man M orking near by among a
number of other hands. They i^ot out
of their buggy and jumped theienee,
M'hcreupon the negro started to run.
One of them raised his gun and tired,
severely Mounding him in the- leg.
Our informant, Air. John Hall, the
mail-carrier, failed to learn the name
of the Mounded man or tho nature of
the offence charged. It certainly
seems to us like a high-handed meas
ure for parties from Georgia to attempt
to arrest anyone in South Carolina
M’ithout the proper authority, and
M’liat is still more strange is that after
disabling the man m Iioui they sought,
with a painful Mound, they returned
to their buggy and drove off M'ithout
making any arrest. The atlair should
he investigated, and if this is simply
an unauthorized or lawless act the
olfenders should he brought to justice.
Crops in Aiken County.
Corn planting is over except in tlie
loM* bottoms. Cotton planting isheing
vigorously pressed forward. Never
before in the history of the*County
has such a large area been given to
oats, and the prospect fora bountiful
yield is very promi-ing. A limited
area of M'heat has also been planted,
and so far is doing Midi; hut no man
can tell M'hat M ill he the outcome of
a M’heat crop in this latitude until he
has it safely housed. There is every
indication that this M ill he a year of
plenty in ‘the matter of provision
crops, consequently the farmers M ill
have more to spend next fall in pur
chasing those conveniences and com
forts M hieh go to make home attract
ive and life enjoyable. A year of
abundance means the biggest kind of
a Democratic victory next fall. With
a big oat crop harvested and a tine
corn crop in the*Held, the hoys M ill
have nothing to Merry them; all they
m ill have to do is to put on their red
shirts ami tie n feu - bundles of oats
behind their saddles, and ride to every
Democratic meeting held in the coun
ty. Hot work, sharp Mork and patri
otic M’ork is expected of every man, J
