? The first of a series of five suits
involving a total of $1,250,000 got under
way in the Richland court of common
please Wednesday, when the taking
of testimony was started in the
action of Madeline Williams against
the Standard Oil company, and two of
its agents, for $250,000 for damages alleged
to have been suffered by the
plaintiff as the result of the explosion
of a lamp. Miss Williams, a girl in
her teens, whose action is brought by
her guardian ad litem, E. H. Williams,
charges that she was seriously injured
and disfigured when a lamp, filled
with oil sold by the company through
J. J. Amick and E. L. Givens, the two
agents named in the complaint, exploded,
at Steadman in Lexington
county, February 1. The complaint alleges
that the explosion was caused
by the supposed kerosene being mixed
with a more volatile oil. The four
other cases involving 51,000,000, wmcn
-are pending, are based upon the same
alleged circumstances as those set
forth in the suit now being tried.

OBITUARY.
DIED?At her home near Hickory
Grove yesterday of paralysis, Mrs.
JOHX WRAY, aped about 72 years.
Interment was in the cemetery at
Canaan Methodist church this morning
following funeial services conducted by
Rev. J. K. Lewis. Mrs, Wray is survived
by her husband and two sons,
Messrs. Charlie and Herbert Wray of
Hickory Grove. A brother Mr. John
Crow of Lattimore, N. C., also survives.
