BIG TREE AS RESERVOIR
Baobab Trees Often Serve as Natural
Cisterns.
r? Central Africa relates the Detroit
"Votvv Ihp flr-nnl if. liHolm.h tree, whose
trunk sometimes attains a dh*meter of
forty feet, often serves as a natural
cistern, retaining rn in water in large
quantities in a cavity formed at the
tcp of the broad trunk.
Taking the hint thus afforded by
nature, the Arabs artificially hollow out
the trunks of large baobabs and fill
them with water durlrg the prevalence
of rains as a provision against
the dry seasons.
These cisterns' are in some eases
twenty feet in height and eight or ten
feet in diameter. The water i? used
both for drinking and for irrigating
melon patches. .1
? The inheritance tax bill passed by
the house last year, is now under consideration
by the judiciary committee
of the senate. There is much difference
of opinion as to the merits of the
pending1 bill.
