GARNERED WITH SCISSORS News From Within and Without the County. CONBENSED FOR QUICK READING 8ome Item* of Fact, Soma of Comment and All Helping to Give an Idea of What Our Neighbor# Are Saying and Doing. Fort Mill Times, Sept. 15: "I do not expect the sales of cotton on the Fort Mill market this year to exceed 3,000 bales," yesterday said J. B. Mills, who for years has been a cotton buyer here. "Ordinarily the sales in Fort Mill run above 4,000, but the crop will be light j this year, due principally to the reduced acreage and the severe cut in the amount of commercial fertilizer put under the crop last spring." Mr. Mills does not expect the activity of the boll weevil in this section to materially reduco the cotton production this year Mann White, 13-year-old negro boy, Wednesday afternoon was committed to jail by Magistrate J. R. Hailc on the serious charge of assault with Intent to ravish a 12 year old white girl in Fort Mill township, a short distance beyond the corporate llmitB of the town, Monday afternoon. The boy was arrested, by J. F. Lee, special constable, Wednesday at noon, I u'hiiA h<> was nickinrr cotton in a field near town. Late yesterday afternoon he was taken to the county jail in J York by J. H. Patterson, constable, and J. T\ Lee." The Hnrdaway Contracting company, which has the contract for building the bricli and concrete portions of the York-Mecklenburg .bridge across the Catawba river at the "Buster" Boyd ferry, twelve miles northwest of Fort Mill, has shipped a number of carloads of machinery and tools to Worth, sidetrack between Griffith and Charlotte, preparatory to beginning actual work on the construction of the bridge. The machinery and tools will be hauled at once from Worth to the site of the bridge. Somesurprise was expressed in Fort Mill that the contracting company should have decided to .make Worth the point to which its machinery and supplies were to be shipped instead of Fort Mill, as the distance to the bridge site from that point is 16 miles against a distance of 12 miles from Fort Mill, but the extra cost of the longer haul will be more than offset by the lower ft eight rate to the Xorth Carolina sidetrack, according to a statement of an employe of the company. The contracts for the York-Mecklenburg biidge were let a few weeks ago at a joint meeting in Charlotte of the YorkMeclflenburg county commissioners for a little less than $100,000, which is said to have been about one-fourth l<-ss than the bridge could have been built for a year ago. it us saui 10 uenuipurpose of th?""contrttctors to rush the construction of the bridge, but at best several months will be required t<> complete the structure.
