The Boss Was Imprssssd.?The
marriage license clerk of a southern
town was In the habit of amusing the
other clerks and himself, at the expense
of the colored applicants, by
using the biggeet words he could
think of, slung together in a ji*wbreaking
jumble, while the applicants
stood, open-mouthed, marveling at his
linguistic wisdom.
One day, when the clerk was holding
forth before a colored woman who was
getting' tne license ucwuw n.c
pective groom couldn't leave his work,
the chief clerk of the court happened
Into the office, which he visited about
once a week. The marriage license
clerk didn't see him come in, and the
boss listened to something like this:
"You see, madam, so far as we're
indiflferentiated, we'd just as llefereno
hand you the license for the lucre
without interrogationing you and
transubstantiating tt into the record, J
but we're compelled to ask you if the
applicarinuses are white or black or
married or single or divorced, for the
purpose of safeguarding the conserva>
tion of the dictum."
"Yessuh, yessuh," said the woman
with respectful awe.
When she was gone the boss called
the clerk into his private office.
"Say, Eddie," he asked, "what's this
conservation of the dictum we've got
to safeguard? Is there much of it ia
the office?"
'Twas Ever Thua?Mr. Smith, hearing
music and singing at his neighbor's
house, decided he would drop in and
sqp how they were.
Mr. Jones welcomed him and ush
ered him into the parlor wnere nu?
daughter was playing the piano and
his sop singing. Mr. Smith begged
them to continue. They consented.
The first song they selected was
"Mother." They sang this very feelingly
and then father joined in on the
chorus. This was followed by "Mother
Machree" and others of like sentiment
on sjongs about mother?how
true they were, how dear and how
they loved to sing them.
Then, as Mrs. Jones hadn't appeared
yet, Mr. Smith inquired about her
state of health.
"Oh," said Mr. Jones, "she's well
enough. She's in the kitchen doing the
dishes, but after she has finished and
has taken in the wood she'll join us."

" 'Hump.' said Blanc. 'What is
your brother's profession, may I ask-'
" 'Chiropodist,' said Nore.
" 'Then.' said Blanc, 'the thing is
easy. Let him take his holiday at the
foot of a mountain or in the fertile
corn country of the middle west and
for holiday reading let him purchase
"The Pilgrim's Progress." by Bunyan.'"
Bewildered Poultry^?"What is a
roost, dad?" asked Tommy.
"A roost, my son, is a pole upon
which chickens sit at night," replied
his father.
"And what's a perch, dad?"
"A perch is what shlckens perch on."
"Then, I suppose, dad, a chicken
could roost on a perch?" aame the
further inquiry.
"Of course," was the smiling reply.
"And they could perch on a roost?"
"Why, y-yes."
"But if. just after some chickens
had perched on a roost and made it a
perch, some more chickens came along
and roosted on the perch and made it
a roost, then the rooet would be a
perch and the perch would be a roost,
and some of the chickens would be
perchers and the others would be
roosters, and "

now the Hun has shown himself in his
true colors, our ears are no longer
shattered with the noisy music of
Richard Strauss."
The speaker was Handel Booth, sec
retary of the L>enver rniinariuunn; ?vciety.
"I know a chap," he went en, "who
said to his music teacher:
" "Professor, I'd like to take up the
study of Strauss with you. What will
it cost?"
" 'Dot. mein friendt," said the old
professor, 'vill depend on how many
times der piano will hare to be rebuild'
Stung!?"Now," said the farmer to
the new hand from the city, "I want
yo? to clean up the pigsty, the stable,
the henhouse, and all the other houses
of the stock!"
For two days the new hand worked
vigorously; then he appeared before
his employer with both eyes nearly
closed, his mouth swollen, and red
lumps over face, neck and hands.
"Gimrae my money," he demanded:
"I'm goin' to quit."
"What's the matter?" asked the
farmer.
"I don't know what's the matter,"
returned the victim. "but It happened
when I started to clean the behive."
Who Blames Him??The professor
was given a banner to carry in the
suffrage parade, but in spite of the
entreaties of the marshal he refused to
open it, but marched the entire distance
with the pennant furled. When
he reached home his wife accosted him
with:
"John, why on earth didn't yo? unfurl
your banner?"
"Do you know what it said on that
banner?" retorted John.
"No."
"Wall, this was the inscription:
'Men can vote?why can't I?*"
Not His Sort of Berth.?A commercial
traveler is on friendly terms with
a porter of a sleeping car that he uses
frequently.
"Well, Lawrence," announcad the
salesman gleefully one morning. "I've
