to disgust others by the habit
"Wait. Put that dirty handkerchief
out of sight and use less grease on
your hair in the future. Now you look
a bit decent. You have a book on 'Etiquette
and Deportment.' Very well, I
don't want' it I am only the servant
girl. Go up the stairs to the front
door and talk with the lady of the
house. She called me a downright, nodoubt-about-it
idiot this morning, and
1 think the book you're selling i3 just
what she requires."
Watched. The second grade youngsters
were bringing back their health
charts for their teacher's Inspection in
one of the city schools. One after another
had passed through her hand
without comment. Then she came to
one of a little boy who always looked
very dingy indeed. "Why, how is this,
William?" she asked. "You have
marked a mark saying that you have
taken a bath every day. Have you
faken a bath every day?"
William was positive in his assertion
that he had. But the little boy
across the aisle was not. "Why, I
bet he hasn't taken a bath all over
for a whole year," he said. "I know
'cause I live next door and they haven't
had their tub off the porch except on
-ooiijom, fnr t don't know when."
They Don't Mix.?"No, Hebert," said
she in a low tone, "it is impossible. "I
fear to trust my future with you."
"And why?"
"I have watched your conduct closely.
It lacks the mark of such devotion
as my soul craves."
Do I not come to see you four nights
in the week?"
"Yes, but 1 have detected a ealculat- i
ing selfishness in your nature which I i
fear."
"What do you mean?"
"You have never yet failed to leave

"aren't we going to wash the dishes?"
Their Preparation. "How did you
like the pie supper over at Toad Rock
schoolhouse tuther night?" asked a
friend.
"First rate, myself!" replied Gap
Johnson, of Rumpus Ridge, Ark. "Wife
enjoyed it right smartly, too. But our
fourteen children had been ga'nting
theirselves up for a couple of days in
preparation for it, and they did not get !
more than about half enough to eat." j
"A Wife's Revenge." The wife was
having a small bridge party at the j
house for a company of women and one I
of the guests failed to appear, leaving
a vacant place at one of the tables, so
she called up her husband at the office
and asked whether he would not
come home early and "fill out."
"But why can't you play with a
dummy?" he asked, evidently having
no relish for the game.
"Why, the girls have invited you,"
was the wifely response.
Habit. An ex-judge had been nominated
major in a French country district.
It soon devolved upon him to
sanction a marriage ceremony.
"Do you consent to marry this gentleman,
young lady?" he asked amiab
ly"Yes,"
was the reply.
Then, suddenly changing his tone to
one of great severity, he said to her
proposed husband. "And you have
you nothing to say in your defense?" *

American sergeant in France who is
still uncertain whether or not he gets
a wound stripe.

against machine-gun nests and shrapnel

came to halt and dig in. While at this ,
