Joshua Smith, Colored.
Born July 13, 1849. Died June 29,
1919.
- Josh Smith was a friend of my father
from my earliest recollection and
being a frequent visitor to our home
?. 1 can hardly remember when his name
first became familiar.
He was the "Father Hunter."
As a lad I drank in the stories he
told of squirrel and rabbit hunts by
day and o'possum hunts by night and
my ambition was to grow large
enough to join in the great sport.
As a large boy I soon began to follow
the others, see them kill the rab- J
bits and squirrels and carry the gun. .
To me it meant as much as it means
to the mountaineer to kill the deer.
My next great privilege was to join
the Father Hunter in the sport he
loved best pursuit of the o'possum. and
how well he earned his famous title
*of "Josh the Possum Hunter," all

Josh Smith delighted to be useful
.ind serviceable to both races, and he
never withheld his services to those in ,
distress.
He was kind to all, rich and poor, .
small boys and little girls.
After a roundup of game his next ]
great delight was to prepare a great 1
supper; first for his white friends,
then for his colored friends, and that
he knew how to do it everybody
knows. i
Josh Smith, Ike Wright and Sam
Woods were the leaders of the great ,
hunt about which Foley used to tell.
Josh was upright and true. He believed
in God and lived a life of which
his friends were not ashamed.
The Father of Hunters has passed
away leaving a record of good deeds ,
that won't ever be forgotten.

of roads, the materials from which
they are constructed, the different
grades of soil suitable for top dressing,
the manner of draining roads and all
facts pertaining to sand-clay and permanent
road construction. This exhibit

who will give demonstrations

in York county can afford to miss
