* A Proficient Instructor. When father
came home to dinner he observed
a vacant chair at the table. "Where's
the boy?" he asked, nodding to the
chair.
"Harry is upstairs," come in a tone
of painful precision from the mother
"I hope he Is not sick."
There was an anxious pause. "No,
he Is not sick," continued the mother,
"It grieves me to say, Richard, that
our son, your son, has been heard
swearing on the streets. I heard him
myself."
"Swearing!" exclaimed the father,
"I'll teach him to swear!" And with
that the angry parent started upstairs
in the dark. Half-way up he
stumbled and came down with his chin
on the top step.
When the confusion had subsided
Harry's mother was heard saying: from
the hallway: "That will do Richard
dear. You have given him enough for
one lesson." Harper's Magazine.
Ths Rewards of Literature. "Did
you make any money on your last
novel?" asked the writer's close friend.
"Did I make any money?" echoed
the great novelist. "Well, I should say
I did! I sold that description of the
Palisades in Chapter 3 to the Quickline
Railroad for five thousand dollars.
My tribute to the Plaster de Paris
Hotel in New York, in Chapter 10,
brought me three thousand dollars from
the hotel people, and the United Resorts
Limited paid me another thousand
for my rhapsody on the sunset in
tho Umpegog Mountains, in Chapter
80, where the hero takes her in his
arms. What's left of it I boil down into
a short story and get ten dollars for it.
Did I make any money? Well, now!"
Not That Kind. The business agent
for a Chautauqua went to a prosperous
town to see some of the natives
with regard to booking a performance
and finally landed in the office
of Jones.
"Yes, I am Mr. Jones," said the occupant.
"What can I do for you?"
"I called to see you about a Chautauqua,"
returned the visitor.
"Nothing doing," curtly answered
Jones. "My wife and I have decided
on a car of another make."

Frcm Experience. The question
was given to the class, "Why does a
cow need two stomachs?" and little
George's answer savored of experience:
"So that when she has an ache in
one of them she can use the other."
Dangerous Beast. The teacher had
been telling her class about the rhinoceros
family. "Now, name some things,"
she said, "that are very dangerous to
get near to, and that have horns."
"Automcbiles!" promptly answered
Johnny. Harper's Magazine.
Seizing the Opportunity. "Never

"That's right, ma," agreed Willie

An Infallible Recipe. Little Eunice
was attending her first class in domestic
science and was asked to tell
briefly the surest way to keep milk
from souring. And Eunice, who was
an exceedingly practical child, gave
this recipe: "Leave it in the cow."
An Exception. "Remember, my son,"

nothing."
"Oh, I don't know," returned his
hopeful. "Did you ever try putting
'Very respectfully yours' at the end of

Why Edward Flunked. "What was

the Sunday-school teacher.
Edward pondered the question gravely.
"I guess," he said slowly, "the

AMERICANS AS FIGHTERS.
Official Opinion of Germans as Expressed
Before Argonne Attack.
1 The German military report on the
i offensive operations of the American
! troops at St. Mihiel has come into the
possession of the American First army
f corps. Here are some extracts from
. report that the Americans "fight to
the last and do not put up their hands"
, and surrender.
"At least nine American divisions
' took part under the command of Gen.
1 Pershing. Of these nine divisions there
i were three the 1st, 2nd and 42d
first class attacking divisions; two, the
4th and the 26th, good fighting divisions
which had already shown their
work in other large attacks.
i The attack was preceded by a four
?< ?_ ,l,ll(lnn
hour artillery prepa.rin.iun, m auu>uv>.
to a short trench mortar bombardment.
The shooting of the batteries
was very good, not only on the front
trenches but also on all the communication
and rear areas. The
initial attack was carried out according
to schedules, but the successive
waves showed great ineptitude in following
up the advance. Officers as
well as men did not understand how I
to ipake of the terrain. Instead of
seeking protection when they encountered
opposition they merely fell back.
To crawl backward or forward on the
ground, or to advance in quick jumps, '
does not seem to be understood by the
Americans. They return lying on the
ground for the timf being ar.d then
just stand up again and try to advance.
Neither in mass formation nor
individually do the Americans know
how to conduct themselves in an attack.
They are unquestionably brave.
They are evidently afraid of being
captured. When capture impends,
however, they fight to the last and do '
not put up their hands.
'The Americans showed themselves
skilled in the use of machine .guns. ,
iJ
In defense tney are very a-uauiuus. j
The conduct of the infantry seems to j
show a lack of military training. The ,
artillery preparation was well carried
out.
"The leadership was unskilled and
awkward. The enemy apparently has
many officers at his disposal, but the >
elements of leadership are lacking, j
Their embarrassment was unmistakable !
after obtaining their initial success, j
They remained helpless on their line
and were unable to take full advantage
of their victory. The French, in
the same position, would have been
much more dangerous. After the infantry
had reached its objective the
higher command failed. It
was therefore possible for the army
detachment (the Germans), under the
most difficult conditions, to extricate j
itself from its precarious situation in i
one night. The American is
very amateurish, and therefore not to
be feared in a large attack." I
This official German report was
written very shortly before the Americans
with a "large attack" tore
through the Argonne and went to Se- j
don.
The Logical Place. "When the
waiter at the club was arrested as a
spy, where did they take him to ques- 1

"They took him to the grill-room." 1

A Checkered Career. A man made
a bet with his wife which was indis- ]

The wife won which was foreor- 1

The man wrote the wife a check for ;
$5 in payment of the bet which was 1
sad. i
The wife cashed the check at the grocery,
but forgot to indorse it (
which was natural.
The grocer, despite the lack of indorsement,
paid it to a packing-house i
collector which was careless.
The packing-house collector turned j
it in which was all in a day's work. ]
The packing-house office man discovered
the lack of indorsement
which was good work. '
He handed it back to the driver and 1
docked the driver's salary which was
