YESTERDAY'S WAR NEWS Summary of Development* on BattleV ground* of Europe. ^ Allied troops have landed at Saloniki, Greece, and two powerful Russian squadrons have appeared off the Bulgarian port of Varna, on the Black sea. Whether Bulgaria has complied with the Russian ultimatum that she break with the central powers is not known, but her failure to do so is considered certain to result in the creation of another war zone. While unofficial reports in London are that Greece has protested against violation of her neutrality, dispatches from Athens assert that the Greek people received news of the landing calmly, realizing that if the worst shotild come the Allied troops WVU1U aid them in repelling Teutonic aggression. The Greek minister in London has declined to affirm or deny that Greece has protested. Bulgaria, it is reported, has announced that she will immediately reply to the last note of the entente powers, concerning Servia's offer to Bulgaria of compensation for Bulgarian ft neutrality. An Athens dispatch Sun* day said the powers of the entente had withdrawn their offer of concessions of Macedonian territory to Bulgaria. Heavy fighting still is in progress in parts of France. In Artois tne Germans are on the offensive, but ac^ cording to Paris they have been everywhere repulsed except south of Givenchy, where they retook from the French the crossing of five roads. A British report from Field Marshal Sir John French, says the Germans northwest of Hulluch have recaptured the greater part of the Hohenzollern redoubt, taken from them last week. Numerous other attacks made against the British trenches between the quarries and the SermodesHulluch road, were repulsed with severe losses. The Germans declare that in the east the Russians advanced to the attack in dense masses east of Vilna, but were repulsed with unusually heavy losses. Petrograd admits the t( loss of trenches in the region of Dvinsk. but declares that in a eountmt or attack the Germans were defeated and the trenches recaptured. The Anglo-French bond issue of J500.000.000 already has been oversubscribed. The amount of the over> subscribing, it is estimated, will reach 150,000,000. ? kl A Kirwfi SUU I n UKnULllin II - ? According to the bureau of vital statistics, 252 deaths occurred in South Carolina during the month of July from pellagra. ? The British war office has advised Judge George W. Nicholls of Spartanburg, that to return the body of his son Montague, recently killed in France, will be impossible. ? Governor Manning on Saturday reprieved until October 16, Willie Bethune, a Florence county negro, who was to have been electrocuted Saturday for the murder of a white man more than six years ago. Bethune, who is 26 years old, has been reprieved several times. The case has been tried before the highest courts in the land. ? Fire In Barnwell Saturday destroyed the dispensary, bottling plant and opera house. Whisky valued at 632,000 was stored in the dispensary and bottling plant. It was insured for only 68,000. The opera house was ^ valued at 65,000. The origin of the fire is unknown but it is supposed to have been caused by defective wiring. AT THE CHURCHES * FIRST BAPTIST. IF YOU never have any claim to make against an Insurance Company, either Life, Fire or Accident, it will not make a particle of difference whether your Insurance is placed with an Agent who knows his business or one who does not, but isn't it a fact that you realize that it is possible that you MAY have a fire or an accident, and know, beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are going to die, and in the case that that you regard as possible or that that you know to be certain, does happen, don't you feel that your mind would be easier in the meantime did you KNOW that an Agent who was capable of looking after your business, and who would render effectual service, had written your business. WHILE I DO NOT CLAIM TO KNOW all about all kinds of insurance, or any one of the numerous branches, still I do claim that because of many years' experience and constant study, I am as well equipped as any Agent in the State, doing a general Insurance business, to render EFFICIENT SERVICE, and better than the majority, and I solicit the patronage of the public solely on the ground of SERVICE RENDERED.
