GOVERNOR BLEASE OBJECTS A Senator Weston Resigns from Hospital Inquiry Board. Columbia, January 27.?Senator Francis H. Weston of Richland county, today, rising- to a question of personal privilege in the senate, resigned as a member of a committee to investigate the affairs at the state hospital for the Insane. Senator Weston made his statement giving the reason of his resignation to be a letter from Governor Blease objecting to -a his being on the committee. Governor Blease in his letter stated that he was informed that Senator Weston represents as an attorney some of the parties in the investigation. The resignation was accepted by the president of the senate and another appointment will be announced. Senator Weston's statement to the senate was practically as follows: "Mr. President. I rise to a question ~ of personal privilege. I hold in my * hands a copy of a letter from the governor which reads as follows: " 'The Hon. Charles A. Smith, Lieutenant Governor, Senate Chamber, Columbia, S. C.?Dear Sir: I notice m * * that Vnil irom ine newByo^ci i^viw ? have appointed F. H. Weston, senator from the county of Richland, a member of the asylum investigating committee. Personally I haven't any objection to Mr. Weston, and in fact, I have no personal interest in this investigation, either one way or the other, other than that, if there should be anything wrong, that it be exposed, and the proper steps be taken to correct the evils. However, I desire to fcall your attention to the fact that Mr. Weston appeared before the board of regents at a recent meeting as attorney for one of the parties interested, (so I understood and believe) and I do not think that he should be a member of the jury to try his own client, or matters interesting his own client, and if he remains on the com- i mittee I shall decline to have anything to do with it, either in my private official capacity, for the reasons I here state, as I have had enough partiality displayed against me, and enough political spite, since I have been governor, in these matters of socalled investigation. * " 'Very respectfully, " 'Cole L. Blease, Governor.' "I wish to state that I am not an attorney for any one interested in this investigation and that I shall ask the committee to investigate as " ?T Qm nr not I Wish tO lu v* 11C111VI A M... < state that while I advocated the resolution, I have no personal feelings in the matter, especially against the governor. That I have known him since we were students together in the South Carolina college and have been associated with him in one branch or another of the general assembly, for nearly twenty years. I have always taken an active Interest in penal and charitable institutions of the state, and when I understood that this matter was to come up before the board of regents I went there solely in the capacity of a senator. I _ desire above everything that this in* vestlgatlon shall be free from any < partisanship or bias, and consequent- . ly 1 beg to resign from the committee."?News and Courier. THE KANOY KITCHEN < JOHN DEMAS, Proprietor. { Echoes From the South's Past? Here is some sound advice for old nn-' "ninff in the evncf words it came from the lips of five of the South's greatest men: "When to the intelligence of the Southern men we have added the wholesome Instinct of SAVING money, no race can equal us."?Robt. E. Lee. "The lesson we must learn Is the value of money and the value of SAVING money. Economy makes strong, industrious, successful men. I cannot state this too emphatically."?Jefferson Davis. "SAVE your money and thrive or pay the price in poverty and disgrace."?Andrew Jackson. "SAVE and teach all you are interested in to SAVE; thus pave the way to moral and material success."? Thomas Jefferson. "Men of the South?SAVE. You must learn this lesson or that economy which stiffens the North and inspires and stimulates its industry, will overwhelm you."?Henry Clay. YORK SUPPL WHOLESALE A Sure Proposition On February 22, 1878, the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company Issued to Charles L. Railey of Lexington, Ky., an Ordinary Life Policy for *10,000 on the Accelerative Endowment Plan. Mr. Railey was 34 years of age when the policy was issued and the annual premium was *251.80. At the time the policy was Issue the face of the policy?$10,000?was not to be paid by the company except in case of the death of Mr. Railey or at age 96! All Ordinary Life Policies, issued by all companies, contain those conditions, and that is why the average man objects to them and prefers a fifteen or twenty pay life. At the time the policy was issued Mr. Railey had the privilege of using his annual dividends to reduce his premium'or to leave them with the company to be applied on the Accelerative Endowment Plan and thus convert his policy Into an endowment. He chose the latter plan and as a result on Feb. 22, 1908, 30 years after the policy was ismed, the company paid him *10,764.72 in cash, while he was yet living. Durng the 30 years he deposited *7,554 ivith the company. Had he died at iny time after he made his first deposit the company would have very promptly paid *10,000 to his benefljiaries. Don't you think 30 years' rilt-edge protection and the payment if *10.764.72 in cash is a fine return jn payments of *7,554 made in installments? The company has thousands )f policies of this kind in force. I vould be pleased to give any additlonil information you may desire relative ;o the plan." The company issues polcies on acceptable lives at all ages from 15 years to 70. It insures both nates and females, and issues them :o be paid up with any number of payments the assured may elect.
