Planting Seeds.?Mr. and Mrs. Jones
were very proud and fohd of their
chickens. Great, therefore, was their
consternation when, on coming down
the other morning for their breakfast
eggs, they noticed that a favorite hen
was missing, relates Answers.
"It must have been stolen," said
Jones. Just then he observed Brown,
of next door, digging in his garden.
Brown, who was a man of fewwords,
was usually in bed at this hour,

so Jones put nis neau uver w? n?...
"Good morning! What are you
working at so early in the day?" he
asked suspiciously.
"Planting."
"Planting what?" persisted Jones.
"Seeds," said Brown.
There was a snort from Jones, who
had suddenly seen something.
"Seeds?" he shouted. "Why that's
one of my fowls you're burying, you
scoundrel!"
"That's all right?seeds inside!"
said the laconic Brown, as he resumed
his digging.
One at a Time,?"Old Adam Forepaugh,"
said a friend of the veteran
showman, "once had a big white parrot
that had learned to say 'One at a
time, gentlemen?one at a time?don't
crush.'
"The bird had, of course, acquired
this sentence from the ticket taker of
the show. Well, one day the parrot
got lost. In the country, and Mr. Forepaugh

seen the parrot, directed him in his
quest, and finally, as he was driving
by a cornfield, he was overjoyed to
hear a familiar voice.
"He got out and entered the field,
and found the parrot in the middle
of a flock of crows that had picked
him until he was almost featherless.
As the crows bit and nipped away, the
parrot, lying on his side, repeated
over and over again: 'One at a time,
gentlemen?one at a time?don't

Taking No Risks.?"We all know,"
says William H. Crane, the popular
actor, "how suspicious human nature
is. Sometimes, when a person is particularly
so, it is very amusing.
"I have an intimate friend who is a
prominent dentist in a western city,

and one day when I was in ms uuin
a woman came to have several teeth
extracted.
"I suppose I ought to take something
to deaden the pain," she said
hesitatingly, "but I'm afraid of gas."
"My friend Immediately reassured
her, and at the last, said:
" 'You will only be unconscious two
or three minutes at the longest'
'The woman took her pocketbook
out and began to oount her money.
'"Never mind that now,' said the
dentist 'You do not have to pay until
I've finished.'
" 'I wasn't going to pay you,' explained
the woman. 'I was going to
count my money.' "?Lippincott's.
The Modern Maid.?It was getting
late at night when the servant girl returned
from the shops with various
domestic purchases. As she explained
the transaction? to. her mistress, she
cried out suddenly"There! If I haven't
forgotten the 'am an' eggs for
breakfast."
"That's a pity," observed the mistress,
but add^l, with kindly philosophy.
"Never mind. The shops will all
be shut now. We shall have to manage
in the morning with bread and
butter and marmalade." The girl
stared. "And what shall I have?" she
inquired.
"Well, Ellen. I suppose you'll have
the same as we do," replied the mistress.
"Yes, Mra X," responded Ellen with
some severity, "but let me tell you I
onn't rir? mv work unless I'm properly
fed."?Manchester Guardian.
Mildly Sarcastic.?He had just
reached the philosophical stage wnen
he slipped into a restaurant for a bit
to eat Then he sat staring ahead,
quietly thoughtful in expression, and
waited.
It is admitted he did some waiting,
too. What happened to his order
couldn't be understood outside the pe
cuuar restaurant nucnen, uui ue spem
half an hour sitting there staring
ahead of him.
At last It came. As the waitress
put the order before him, he started
from his deep study, as if he had forgotten
he had an order coming. Then,
looking up at the fair transporter of
edibles, he said:
"You don't look a day older!"?Everybody's
Magazine.
In his Lino?A gentleman took a
country friend to the opera one night
to hear the "Meisterslnger" performed.
He was very anxious to see the
effect of Wagner's glorious music on
the countryman, and watched him
keenly during the rendering of the
overture, which grand as it is, is a little
noisy, more especially when the
bang of the drums and the crash of
the cymbals occur at intervals.
But the countryman's face remained
absolutely unmoved. At last the city
man could bear his friend's indifference
no longer.
"Doesn't this glorious volume of
onnnj nffort vnu?" he said.
"Oh, not in the least," was the calm
reply. "You forget -I'm a boiler-maker."?New
Orleans States.
He'd Called Seventeen.?Jim was a
new porter in the hotel, and he was
putting in his first night at his new
and responsible position, says the National
Food Magazine. It was 5 in
the morning, and so far Jim had done
all he was told, and getting on splendidly.
"Call 17 and 4," commanded the
night clerk as he looked over his call
sheet. Jim obeyed. After he had
been gone for a considerable time the
clerk went up to see if he had called
the rooms designated.
"Well." sighed the new porter,
whom he found on the third floor,
"I've got 17 of 'em, but I haven't
started on the other four yet."
Bearing Burdens.?"Where have you
been. Mary Ann?"
"I've been to the Girls' Improvement
class, ma'am," was the maid's reply.
"Well, what did the curate say to
you? Did you tell him who your mistress
was?"
"Please, ma'am, he said I wasn't to
give notice, as I intended, but that I
was to consider you as my burden?
and bear it."?Tit-Bits.
The Unnamed Animal.?The teacher
In a country schol always tried to
make the lessons as interesting as
possible.
"Now, children," she said, "let me
see what you remember about the
animal kingdom and the domestic animals
that belong to it You have
named all the domestic animals but
one. Who can tell what the one is?"
There was no reply.
"What!" exclaimed the teacher.
"Does no one know? It has bristly
hair, likes the dirt, and is fond of getting
into the mud."
A small boy at the end of the class
raised a timid hand.
"Well, Adam?" said the teacher,
"Please, ma'am," said the little boy,
reflectively, "it's me."?Lipplncott's

Mrs. B. P. Greer, Oakland Ave.,
