? Manning special of October 18 to the Columbia State: In the past month or so there have been several Instances of' burglary and larceny in Manning,, private residences being entered in the night time and money and other 'articles being purloined, but when a negro attempted to enter the home of W. R. White about 11 o'clock last night he was effectually caught. Mr. White, who is the oldest citizen of the place, had his house broken into some time ago, so he adjusted a loaded gun with wires attached in such a manner that any one forcing an entrance through a window would cause the gun to be discharged. Last night, as stated, about 11 o'clock the gun was fired and a hurried examination discovered a young negro man named Lewis McFarland badly wounaea in the face and neck. His life was spared by the fact that the load of shot passed through a board before striking him. He was lodged in the lockup and this morning when the doctors got through picking shot out of him he was sent up by Magistrate Brad ham for trial on the charge of burglary. ? Robert Dodd, Jr., and W. E. Campbell-were killed by a falling wall .during a fire that destroyed the automobile garage of A. L. Todd, in Anderson last Thursday night About a dozen automobiles ware burned. ' AT THE CHURCHES. I have heard the expression many times, and it impresses me very much as the statement I have heard church members make as to not believing in foreign missions. I have never known of many men who actually carried life insurance offering the first objection, or of any who made the second, who liberally contributed to home mis slons or any other kind?have you, gentle reader?
