COTTON PICKERS WANTED Hen. John L. McLaurin Makoe Liberal Offer to White Boys. At the request of W. P. Beard of Abbeville, the Greenville Piedmont last Tuesday prints the following rather unique proposition to boy cotton pickers: As an experiment I want one hundred white boys between the ages of fifteen and twenty, to go to Marlboro county in this state and pick cotton for the lion. John I* McLaurin and others. Only boys of good moral character wanted, and prefer that they come from the cotton mill villages. These are the terms: I will pay fifty cents per one hundred pounds and furnish free transportation from Greenville, or some other nearby town to Marlboro and return, and also free lodging while down there as well as the services of a good cook free. The necessary groceries will be furnished in bulk at cash prices each boy to pay his pro rata share, while medical attention If needed will be given free of charge. There will be two sets of cash prises given away, first second and third, in each set of $10, $5 and 12.50 respectively for each set for largest amount picked per day in one set and for the season in the other set, the winner in one set not eligible to enter contest in the other set Will need the boys about thirty days and in that county where cotton is so thick, heavy and easily picked, they ought to average one dollar per day. while their board would not be over per month at the outside and first clan board at that I also promise to see that the boys are well taken care of in the way of pleasures as there are several good fishing streams near Mr McLaurln's plantation and a large lake of overj - I-H Anil I one nunarea acres ngm m ???? - when the season ends, we will Rive them a big barbecue and a general Jollification to wind up with. Grading Cotton Seed.?There was a conference yesterday afternoon between Commissioner Watson and B. F. Taylor, secretary of the State Cotton Seed Crushers' association, at which definite agreement was reached as to all of the details incident to the putting Into effect of the system of grading cotton seed to t>e conducted oy me ucpartment of agriculture during: this year. . Commissioner Watson stated last night that the necessary equipment h had been provided at the state laboratory and the extra man who will do this work under the direction of the chief chemist had been selected. He will come to the department from the! United States service, though a South Carolinian by birth. Mr. Watson stated further that a definite agreement as to the method of drawing the samples and transmitting them to the department had been reached and that in a vei>' few days he would issue a special circular of Instructions to be sent to all cotton seed oil mills and buyers of cotton seed. Special books with blanks upon which to enter all data regarding file sample will be placed at each oil mill in the state. The samples, If the bhljiment has reached destination, will be drawn in the presence of two disinterested witnesses, who shall be reputable fanners residing in that particu btr community. Mr. Watson stated that be hoped to have everything ready as far as the department Is concerned, for the Opening of the cotton oil mill season ne*t week. f The ; Inauguration of the system of grading tn the state of South Carolina has attracted attention all over the cotton belt and many commendatory letters have come from different states to both Mr. Taylor and the commissioner of agriculture.?Columbia State Thursday. ? Greenville. September 4: United States Marshal J. Duncan Adams has tendered his resignation upon the request of Attorney General McReynolds. Mr. Adams gave out this information here today. His term would not expire until March, 1915, but he said his resignation would likely take effect October 1. as this is the date when his annual report is made to the Federal department Marshal Adams has held the office 12 years.
