? Unquestionably the most serious
fight that has yet been made on the .
"old guard" of Democrats In the sen- "
. ate, says the Washington correspon^
dent of the News and Courier, has de- t
veloped from the consent of Senator i
Kern, of Indiana, to become a candi- t
date for the caucus chairmanship ?
against Senator Thomas S. Martin, of <
Virginia, the present Democratic chair- e
man. It Is being said that the fight is
mainly directed against Senator Martin,
but there Is no doubt that It In- 1
volves also Senator Simmons, of North J
Carolina; Senator Tillman, of South I
Carolina, and the whole question of se- c
nlority, which seemed, until the past a
few days, to have been settled in favor 1
^ of retaining the existing system with a 1
fe.w modifications. If the "progressives"
can get Martin's scalp they can get the "]
scalps of Simmons and Tillman also J
and are not likely to stop before doing 2
so. This the old men know and the \
fight has become very close and bitter, a
- with the chances still probably in fa'
vor of the seniors when it comes to a ?
show-down. One or two votes may decide
the whole matter and this accounts -1
for the glee of the progressives in get- J
ting Senator Kern to be their candi- 3
date. They feel sure that his colleague b
from Indiana, Senator Shively, would b
vote for him, especially as the election
of Kern as caucus chairman would take _
him off the finance committee and
leave that place for Shively. The apm
pearance of Senator Kern in the field 1
uortin <> ftismlflcant
cigamsi ociiaiui iuu> ?? < w
in that It suggests the active entrance b
of William J. Bryan into the senate **
squabble. The fact is that, having rec- ^
ognized, this mistake in going too far ^
in pushing the claim of Representative A
L Henry of Texas, to be attorney gener- 11
al in the Wilson cabinet, and having ?
apparently reached a basis of adjustment,
which means the nomination of -|
Congressman A. Mitchell Palmer, of J
Pennsylvania, to be secretary of the g
treasury, and Representative A. 3. C(
Burleson to be the Texas man in the h,
cabinet, the Nebraskan has plunged ^
into the senate fight with all the force tc
he can muster. Mr. Bryan is writing j,
personal letters and doing everything _
he can to stimulate his followers in
the senate to Join the attack on Martin.
If that redoubt is carried other
redoubts of seniority in the senate will
be stormed with the same fierceness,
and if the fight of the progressives succeeds
in the senate it will, in all prob\
ability, go over into the house and j
1 overthrow the leadership of Mr. Un- I
' derwood and Speaker Clark, putting
radical Bryan men in the saddle. The
seniors in the senate have the advantage
of position, experience and organization.
They have always won and
f have a good chance of doing so again.
The president-elect is taking no part
in the senate conflict, but that fact is
not restraining Mr. Bryan in the least.
The air is full of electricity around the
capltol and everybody is on the qui ?
vive, remembering the sensational part
played by Mr. Bryan at the Baltimore
convention.

Revision of Pension Roll
To the Veterans of York County:
A meeting of the Pension Board of
York county will be held in the clerk of
court's office at Yorkville on the first
Monday in March, the 3rd, for the pur
post- of ascertaining: the changes since
the last report of the deaths of the
pensioners of York county. It will be
important to get the assistance of the
^ veterans to aid the pension board in
making the changes. It is, therefore,
desirous that those who are to meet F
with us in March will come prepared to
furnish authentic evidence so as to
have an accurate report. A copy of this
notice will be sent to several papers in
. the county, and it is hoped that the
people will Interest themselves in this
matter. The rolls of the veterans are
rapidly thinning and it is desirous to
have as much accuracy as possible to r
report to the state pension board.
Respectfully,
Iredell Jones. Chairman,
Pension Board York County. s
