Wouldn't Bo Compelled.?The senator
who was opposed to votes for women,
found himself cornered by an ardent
suffragette. His gallantry would
not permit of a brusque retort. He listened
attentively while she- enumerated
her reasons why suffragism should
be granted her sex.
"Madam " he began when an opportunity
to speak was at last accorded
him. "I am going to let you into a
great secret." i
He looked carefully about him and
noted that they were alone.
"What is it, senator?" she inquired
eagerly.
"Your wish will soon be granted. We
are soon to make a law compelling the
women to vote!"
He quivered with intensity as he
Imparted the secret A cold, ominous
light sprang Into her eyes.
"Oh. you are, are you?" she fumed.
"Well, we'll see. From this day I shall
use every Influence against suffragism.
Compel us! Why the Idea!" Whereat
she walked angrily away, leaving the
senator to his own pleasant reflections

Not Her Papa,?The bit of humor
and pathos is from the Hawaiian Star:
"An amusing incident Is related of a
young service matron who had relinquished
her husband for two years,
and who, having before his departure
Insisted on a good photograph, applied
herself assidlously to the upbringing
of her two-year-old baby with a view
to the child's familiarity with her distant
father. Each day she would call
the baby girl to her and kneeling beside
her would hold up the photograph
pointing out each feature to the child.
"One day the officer came home. And
the baby girl, then four years old, was
summoned. 'Come dear,' said her
mother, In glee, 'papa has come home
at last.' The child surveyed the officer
In perplexity and finally shook her
head.
" "What is the matter, dear?' asked
her mother.
" 'Well,' replied the child, 'he looks
something like my papa, but my papa
hasn't any legs.'"
Th? Mild Oath.?Hale and alert on
her 78th birthday, Mrs. Hettle Green
munched an onion?her lnfalible
preventive of colds?and talked
cheerily with a New York reporter.
"Nowadays," she said, "people
complain that I dress too plainly, but
when I was a girl they complained
that I was too elegantly dressed. I
was a Quaker in my girlhood, you
know, and that is the best religion.
"How scrupulous the Quakers are!
I remember a quavrel between two
little'Quaker brothers. At the height
nt nnarrel the older brother, ex
asperated beyond endurance, seized
the younger brother by the shoulders,
shook him, and hissed:
" "Thee little you, thee!'
"Then the enormity of his words
overcame him, and he added earnestly:
"Please don't tell mother I swore.' "
Got There First.?The lovely girl,
having lingered a minute in her ?oom
to adjust her transformation, change
the angle of her Grecian band, and >
, make sure that her skirt fitted like
the peeling of a plum, descended to
the parlor to find the family pet ensconced
upon the knee of the young
man caller, her curly head nestled
comfortably against his shoulder.
"Why, Mable," the young lady exclaimed.
"aren't you ashamed of yourself?
Get right down!"
"Shan't do it," retorted the child.
"I got here first."?Everybody's Magazine.
The Name of It.?It W8S a party of
visitors seeing the sights In Pittsburgh
that finally entered the conservatory
presented to the city by Mr. Phipps.
The curator, while showing them
around, was called away on business
and left the visitors in charge of one
. of the clerks. They came to a beautiful
statue which was admired immensely.
It was of translucent marble.
He pointed out the excellence .of the
statue, told the name of the sculptor
and showed it from every viewpoint.
One asked: "Alabaster, isn't it?" "No,"
he said. "Venus."?Argonaut.
Mistook the Game.?a young girl
from a country town went to a city
boarding school, much against the
wishes of her father, who thought she
would be spoiled by city . ways.
Soon she wrote in one of her letters:
"I am in love with ping-pong."
The mother read the letter aloud to
her father, who turned angrily upon
her. saying: "Well, you see, I was
right. I knew no good would come of
her going to the city. Now. you see,
she has got in with one of those dangPhlnomnn

Where Space Counts.?One little boy
In the audience at the Park theatre,
wondered why the odd little cot In the
wall, from which the Scotch playlet, "
"The Concealed Bed," takes It name,
was built In such a peculiar place.
"It's because room Is very precious in
those expensive flats," said the mother,
"and every inch of space must be
utilized."
"Huh," exclaimed the youngster, "if <
they wanted a Christmas tree I sup- 1
pose they'd have to paint one on the <

His Only Opinion.?For stealing a
horse a man was arraigned before a
Judge who denounced him as a persistent
law-breaker and then sentenced '
him to ten years at hard labor in the (
state prison. 1
"Have you anything to say?" the *
judge asked when he was through. ,
"No," said the sentenced one, "except
that it strikes me you are pretty durned
liberal with other people's time!"
None for Him.?Had you heard .
about the Cleveland salesman who I
tried to sell a thermos bottle to a man
from Elyrla? Hadn't you? Well!
"It will keep any liquid hot or cold
for twenty-four hours," explained the
salesman.
"I don't want it." said the Elyrla
man. "If I had any liquid, and it was
good to drink I wouldn't want to keep
it twenty-four hours?hot or cold!"?
Cleveland Leader.
tv "Jinks, who has just returned
from a year's globe trotting, is very <
