? Secretary Hester's analysfs of the cotton movements for the four months of the season, from September 1 to I* December 31, inclusive, shows that compared with the crop movement last year the state of Texas has brought into sight this season, in round figures, 714,000 bales less; other gulf states, which include Arkansas, Louisiana Mississippi, Tennessee, Missouri and Oklahoma, have marketed 834,000 less, and the group of Atlantic states, which include North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Virginia, have marketed 52,000 less, making the decrease in the amount marketed 1,800,000. Assessed at Last? There can be no doubt that our popular county auditor, Mr. M. B. Rabon, is onto his job. A taxpayer called at his office Saturday to make his return. He said he wanted to "sees; ain't this the place you 'sess at?"' Auditor Rabon replied that it was and asked him where he lived, did he pay his poll tax last year, and other questions necessary, and after getting his name and beginning to fill out the blank return, he asked him what he " had. He said he had a wife. Auditor Rabon was onto his job at once as the following will show: He asked him how much his wife was worth. He said he didn't know 'sactly. "Well, what did you give for her?" asked the auditor. He said he gave the preacher two dollars for her. "Well, is she worth two dollars?" he was asked. "Yes, sir," he replied. "Is she worth one hundred dollars?" he was asked. "Well, yes, sir, I guess she Is," rather ar hesitatingly. "Is she worth five hundred dollars?or a thousand dollars?" Then the taxpayer fixed the price definitely. "I-I 'sess her for what I give for her?12.'" The return was soon made, and the fellow with the 2-dollar wife went off feeling like 30 cents.? ^ Wateree Messenger. AT THE CHURCHES. BAPTIST Rev. I. O. Murray, Pastor. New York, Jan. 20.?Spot cotton closed quiet, 25 points lower; middling uplands 14.15; middling; gulf 14.40; sales 650 bales. Futures opened steady and closed Arm as follows: Jan. 14.02; Feb. 13.95; March 14.00; April 14.04; May 14.12; June 14.12; July 14.12; Aug;. 13.90; Sept. 13.05. Oct 12.70; Dec. 12.50. New York, Jan. 20.?There was a renewal of nervousness In the cotton market today and while there was no such rush of liquidation as on previous days, sentiment was very apprehensive as a result of conditions In the stock market with prices suffering; a severe break during the morning. A better tone developed late in the day owing largely to trade buying and expectations of a big reduction in the local stock, and most of the early loss was recovered, the close being firm at an advance of 6 points on October, unchanged prices on December and from 8 to 14 points net lower on the active months. The market opened steady at a decline of 4 points on October, but generally 10 to 15 points lower In response to disappointing cables. According to private advices the Liverpool market has been depressed by straddle selling, and right after the opening here there was a big demand by arbitrage houses who tended to substantiate this view of the foreign weakness. During the early trading the straddle buying Imparted rather a firm tone to the market and prices rallied to within a point or two of last night's finals on the active months. But there was no general demand, two or three brokers seemed to have large selling orders which were supposed to represent further liquidation, and there was a very uneasy feeling over the Wall street situation. The announcement of the suspension of a stock exchange firm having cotton exchange membership was followed by a decline to 13.69 for March and 13.80 for May or 11 to 4 3 points below the closing figures *?f Inst night, but It was announced later that this Arm had no open trades In the cotton markets; there was little Wall street liquidation and the market later firmed up. Mr. Patten wired a local house that he had engaged oc*an freight room for his holdings of 15,000 which would be shipped from the lo[cal stock in the near future, and an impression has been created that a considerable part of the spU supply here has been sold to mills on the decline. Trade Interests were buying In the last hour and with the help ol covering closed March at 11 cents end May at 14.12. Comparison is The Rule Comparison Is the rule In the business world of nearly all transactions of buying and selling, but notwithstanding this fact many otherwise sensible business men Ignore it when it comes to the matter of buying life Insurance, really one of the most Important transactions of their lives, and It is a fact that the managers, general and local agents of some companies in these latter days are unalterably opposed to comparisons, and assign as a reason that they cannot always be fairly made! It would seem that a company that does not want to stand proper comparison as to results, policy conditions, past record, ratio of expense, etc., then comparisons should be made remorselessly, for by no other plan can the buyer be satisfied that he is getting the best at minimum cost. The Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company can today, as in the past, stand every test to which it can properly be subjected, and its agents are always ready and anxious for a "show down." It is entering Qn its sixtyfifth year with a record equalled by few and surpassed by none, and the man who buys life insurance before investigating and learning what the Mutual Benefit has to offer is ignoring his own l?f nmcf j A olr /-* Ko oViAti<n ucoi uuct coio, /xon tu uv- diiutvii, SAM M.
