CONSIDERATE MR. SELLERS.
Columbia Tiger Permitted Raiding
Officers to Depart In Peace.
It is with pleasure that we direct attention
to the kindness of heart latterly
manifested by our fellow-townsman,
Mr. Wade H. Sellers. Unhappily.
it is not infrequent that in the
strenuous battle of this busy world.
I the disposition is for those who can
to crush opposition, to demand and to
take the "pound of tlesh." It is doubly
gratifying therefore when we meet in
the business world a spirit quite con
trary; a spirit of forbearance, a spirit
of generosity. And it is a high duty of
the press to chronicle those events that
give the lie to the croakings of the
croakers when they pessimistically insist
that the world is degenerating in
its social ideals, that there is a retrogression
In our business standards, and
a disappearing of the spirit of chivalry
in the communion of men.
In the public prints yesterday it was
r recorded tfiat tnree dispensary constables,
armed with a warrant, inconsiderate
disturbed the Sabbath peace of
the premises occupied by Mr. Sellers,
Columbia's distinguished "King of
Blind Tigers." These prying?we might
say persecuting?officials, disregarding
the sacred right of our privileged fellow-townsman
to shatter the statutes
upon three hundred and sixty-six days
of leap year, went so far as to seize i
182 half pints of that celebrated brand ]
^ which has won for Major Sellers his <
proud title of "Tiger Booze King." Yet,
mark the generosity of the man;
take note of the forbearance of Colonel
Sellers; let this manifestation of .
chivalry give hope and courage to those
of us having faith in this old world"s
betterment: Not one of those minions i
of the law was killed! t
The provocation to General Sellers <
was great. The indignity thus heap- |
ed upon the King of Tigers would j
m have been unbearable to a man of
meaner mould. He permitted them
to depart with unpunctured carcasses,
even when his good rifle was by his
side: even when he recalled th^t
when last they came?'twas Washington's^
birthday?similarly representing
the despised law, the foremost had
bit the dust: even when he remem- <
bered that the supreme court justice 1
had prompjtly released him upon a
bond in cash, earned in a business in .
which the law was treated with that
contempt which its pusillanimous
weakness deserves; even when he
knew his power to retain counsel by f
* the year to relieve him from trouble
^ when disregarding society's absurd
conventions: even when he knew that at
the recent trial, after one of the J
jurors had been drunk in the habita- :
tions of "tigers." the jury failed to
k . A agree!
What greater victory than the tri
umph of man over himself! What i
nobler part than the magnamimlty of J
permitting to live those creatures deserving
extermination at our hands! (
The city council will negieci an up- t
portunity seldom presented if it fails
to have struck a suitable medal, and j
to adopt warmly appreciative resolutions
in recognition of the generosity,
the clemency, the life-sparing tendency
recently evidenced by Booze
King Sellers.?Columbia State.

Pt Implied in being proposed as a candidate
for the house of representatives,
I desire the 'vjthdrawal of my name
in this connection. With assurances of
the most sincerely reciprocal feelings
to those who would thus honor me. I

Mr, Moore Declines.
Editor of The Yorkvllle Enquirer.
Admitting that it is the duty of every
good citisen to make a sacrifice if need
be, of hlB own time to serve his state,
town or county in matters pertaining
H to the public when called on to do so,
I must decline at this time to stand for
WBf election to the legislature. I have delayed
in the matter of giving my oon
gent trying to figure out how I could
give the time necessary to make the
campaign and attend to the duties pertaining
to that office. I have, after
careful deliberation and consideration,
concluded that I owe by first duty tu
the stockholders of the mill I am connected
with and that it will be out of
the question for me to make the race.
I appreciate the action of my friends
in suggesting my name and decline
most reluctantly. Respectfully,
W. B. Moore.
Goes to the Pen.
In the Federal court yesterday afternoon
just prior to adjournment for
the day, J. E. Schoffner. telegraph
operator, who had been convicted of
the larceny of seven money orders
4 from the Southern Express company,
was called up for sentence. Mr. F. M.
Shannonhouse, his attorney, made a
strong plea for his client, usking the
court for leniency in view of certain
facts which he cited. Mr. Shannonhouse
stated that Schoffner's mother
is a widow and very sorely in need of
the support of her boy and that on
the very day Schoffner was arrested
he received a telegram announcing
the death of his brother.
After hearing the strong appeal of
Mr. Shannonhouse, Judge Poyd stat- j
ed that the crime for which the defendant
stood convicted was most
. serious: that he has not only used the
mails to defraud in one specific inA
stance, but In addition thereto he had
collected on one of the Southern Express
company's orders $35 at RurmB
lington and on two other orders had
^B endeavored to secure two diamond
rings, his failure being only due to
the diligence of the postal authorities
and representatives of the Southern
Express company. The court further
declared that in his estimation the
imposition of a fine would be no punishment
upon the defendant, because
of the fact that his relatives would
have it to pay. and for that reason
sentenced him to serve a year and a
day in the Federal prison at Atlanta.
Schoffner was turned over to United
^ States Marshal Harkrader and was
taken to Atlanta last night.
The seven money orders were stolen
by Schoffner on the night of May
6th from the Southern Express company
at Wellford. S. C.. and on the
21st of May PostofTice Inspectors
