Jas. S. Sherman, Republican nominee for vice president, is seriously ill at a Cleveland, O.. hospital The V Clyde line steamer Chippewa, from Charleston to New York, ran on a submerged rock on the Long Island coast early Wednesday and knocked a big hole in her hull. Wllkinsville, June 24.?Mr. C. W. I "Whisunant. who was caught in the machinery of his mill some days ago. and pretty badly hurt, is all right now. He had a very narrow escape. Since last Friday, we have had a good deal of rain and some hail in different sections, which did considerable damage to crops. Thickety and Gilky creeks were high and crops, hay, etc., upon the lowlands were badly hurt tif not entirely ruined. In company with Rev. G. B. Ratch- j ford, your correspondent went over to see Mrs. Daisy Mitchell, wife of Mr. Martin Mitchell, who is lying very low at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs, Wm. E. Good of Hopewell. Mrs. Mitchell went to the hospital at Charleston, but could get no relief from the treatment she received there. Drs. Youmans & Hope of Lockhart, are now treating her case. The trouble Is principally with her stomach, which will retain neither food nor medicine. Nice monuments have been placed at the graves of Dr. Thomas B. Whitesides and J. Edward Leech, who are buried at Salem. Children's Day will come off at Salem on July 23. Dr. Robert Adams, +* president of the Presbyterian college at Clinton, will make an address on Christian education. The North Pacolet Interdenominational Sunday School convention will meet at Mesopotamia church next Sun. day, the 28th Instant. ' Proposals for the sale or donations to the United States of a site for the Federal building at Gaffney will be received between now and July 10. at which time the same will close and the government will decide upon the matter of finishing up the work. Measles are now getting in their work on this side of the river. ^ Court Is now in session at Gaffney, w Judge Hydrick presiding. Since the doing away of the dispensary in this it county, the criminal docket has been unusually light, and two or three days of the criminal court are long enough. Five cases plead guilty last Monday, these we might say two defendants were from North Carolina, two from York county and one from Spartanburg. Miss Grace Whisonant. who has been teaching in Lancaster, is spending her vacation at her home at Wilkinsville. Miss Fay Whisonant, Vvho has been at Chicora college, is also spending her vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Whisonant at Wilkinsville. Rev. George B. Ratchford preached at Salem last Sunday. He' is a son of Mr. James Ratchford. who several years ago went from Yorkville to ^ Texas, where this young man was born. He preaches at Salem every third Sabhath. 4 Last Sunday evening:, during the rain storm, lightning struck a tree near the chimney of Mrs. John R. Pender and stunned the family. On Monday a tree was struck in the yard of Dolph Lanier and shocked his wife so severely, that she hasn't yet recovered from it.
