GUTHRIESVILLE SCHOOL CLOSING
Interesting Exercises as Conducted In
a Model Institution.
Corre?i>ondence of the Yorkville Knqulrer.
fSuthriesviUe. Juno 1st.?Witnessed
by a lai-ge and appreciative audience,
the commencement exercises of the
ftuthriesville school took place Friday
evening, the 22nd. and were thoroughly
enjoyed by all present. Without
hitch or halt, the boys and girls from
the youngest to the oldest carried out
their respective parts in a highly satisfactory
manner. It was the unanimous
opinion thut they reflected gzeat
credit upon themselves and. of course,
on their worthy and very efficient
teacher. Miss Nora Williamson.
The exercises were opened by Mr.
Robert Moore, of the school, who also
acted as master of ceremonies, in a
neat little speech in which he requested
the audience not to view the performance
with a "critic eye, but pass
the imperfections by," and reminded it
thut "large oaks from small acorns
grow."
Among the many pleasing features
of the programme was the vocal mu!_

trained by Mrs. Mason Bratton, who
assisted in other ways to make the
evening's entertainment a decided success.
The entire programme of more than
two hours' duration was so well rendered
that it would take a "Philadel^
phia judge" to say which number was
best, but special mention should be
made of five-year-old Master Adrian
Curry, and three-year-old Miss Virginia
Bratton. who brought down the
house by their very bright and well delivered
little speeches.
The programme ended with a Japanese
fan drill by eight little girls, dressed
in Japanese costumes and was
splendidly executed.
After this drill, came the awarding
of the general excellence medal, given
by the popular and enthusiastic principal,
and two prizes offered by Mrs.
Mason Bratton to the girl and boy of
the first four grades for the least grammatical
errors made during the school
session. The contest for the handsome
gold medal was a close one between
Miss Marie Moore and Miss Eula
Jackson, resulting In Miss Jackson being
the victor.
The two other prizes mentioned, were
won by Miss Mahelle Reynolds and
Master William Moore. Prof. Flanagan
of the McConnellsville school, in a very
r appropriate manner, awarded the
prizes.
The Thomasson String Band of
Yorkville rendered excellent music
between numbers and added much to
the pleasures of the evening.
With an accomplished teacher, patrons
who are ready at all times to aid
in every possible way and a new. commodious
building filled up with all
necessary equipment, the Guthriesville
school Is doing a splendid work and
will continue to go onward and upward.
To Pay the Delegates.?The Democratic
state convention, having denuded
the office of delegate to the
nnnvontlnn nf its authority
and power, and having reduced its
functions to that of a messenger boy.
ordinary fairness and good taste
would suggest that the South Carolina
Democracy offer to pay the railroad
and hotel expenses of the delegates.
k From sentiments of false pride, some
of the delegates lately elected would
decline to accept a tender of money
"from the state executive committee to
cover their expenses, but be this as it
may, the executive committee should
meet and instruct the treasurer to
make the tender.
It would not be out of place for the
state Democracy to pey the expenses
^ of the delegates even were they not
* Instructed, but the reasons are overwhelming
that instructed delegates
carrying tokens of homage to Mr.
Bryan of Nebraska, should not be
compelled to travel at their own expense.
We move an appropriation from
the exchequer of the state Democratic
executive committee of $250 for each
of the eighteen delegates to Denver,
the check to be endorsed over to an
alternate in the event that a delegate
cannot attend.?News and Courier.
