basis without going into the criminal
part of it. Chairman Murray, however.
had afterward come around to the
4^ view that the matter should be probed
to the bottom.
? Columbia special of March 11, to
Charlotte Observer: Complications
continue to occur to still further complicate
the dispensary muddle. This
morning Chairman ' Murray, of the
winding-up commission, was served
with an order from Judge Pritchard
^ requiring the commission to place in
trust the claims recently ordered paid
of Thierman & Co.. and the Belroy
Distilling company, amounting to $50,000.
until the matter of fees claimed
by Attorneys Meritt and Barnaid for
collecting these claims can be adjusted.
at But as this money had already been
w deposited in the National Loan and
Exchange bank here to the credit of
the claimants themselves it was impossible
to comply wiih the order.
Attorney General Lyon is authority
for the statement that Attorney Lawrence
Maxwell, who was here recently
for these people, only last week collected
a fee of $3,500 from the Belroy
people. Information received here

Mordecai and Carter, on the one side,
and Attorneys Maxwell and Carroll.
P on the other, have fallen out as to
fees In several other cases, and a similar
order to the one served on Dr.
Murray is expected in their behalf. It
will likely meet the same fate, however.
as the commission has placed
the money for these claims to the
* credit of the claimants themselves.
The attorney general's office was trying
to figure out this morning how
Attorney Lester, who had such a
sharp tilt with Attorney Mordecai before
the commission here recently as
to fees, has come out in the scramble.
The Atlanta lawyers and others affiliated
with the attorney general are
also "up in the air" about the $15,000
appropriated to pay them, being tied
* up by the order of Judge Pritchard.
A warrant sent to the Palmetto National
bank of this city by Chairman
Murray today, to transfer the dispensary
deposits there to the rival bank
across the street, the National Loan
and Exchange, presumably for the
4 purpose of paying some of the creditors
whose claims have been adjusted,
was refused payment by the Palmetto
bank, on the ground that to comply
u-ith i? woiiM ?>< to violate Judge Prit
chard's order, which requires payment
to the credit of the claimant or
his authorized attorney. The several
banks of the state holding these deposits
were required at the time de*
posits were made with them to place
securities of equal value with the state
treasurer, which may still further
complicate the situation.
? Charlotte Observer: The dispatch
gp. in yesterday morning's paper, summarizing
the various reports from the
senate committee on military affairs in
relation to the shooting up of Brownsville.
says that "Senator Foraker's report
declared that the testimony of the
eye-witnesses against the negro soldiers
is not reliable and that no motive
for their alleged connection with
the affray has been shown." It was
very clearly shown, as we remember,
that there was a great deal of feeling
between the negro soldiers and the cit?
izens of the town. There was the motive
on the part of the negroes. It was
shown that the bullets discharged into
and found imbedded in houses were
from rifles (Springfield?) such as were
used by the negroes and that no citizens
owned such rifles. Brownsville
was shot up by either the negro sol*
diers, some of whom have been proved
to have been abroad that night, or by
its own people, who must have invaded
the garrison to have gotten the rifles
and ammunition. Is it imaginable that
they stole the guns and cartridges and
with them shot up their own town and
murdered their own fellow-citizens because
they did not like the negroes of
the garrison? Nothing could be more
absurd.

Thopsands SLAtoiiTEREn.?A story
brought to San Francisco from Chile
by a steamer, says that three thousand
strikers have been mowed down by
machine guns 'at the nitrate beds, the
9 slaughter resulting from riots at Iquique.
Four thousand strikers marching
through the streets of Iquique were ordered
to disperse and on their refusing
the troops fired into the ranks with
machine guns, killing 2,500 to 3,000.
Over 2.000 are said to have been buried
by the soldiers.
According to officers of the Norwe
gian steamer Christian Bors in from
Chilean ports, the loss of life in the
j conflict betwen the troops and strikers
in the nitrate beds have been purposely
misrepresented by the Chilean
government, who stated that only one
hundred were killed.
This fight between the troops and the
people broke the strike, and the men
went back to work a week later. WorkW'
ers in the nitrate beds are declared to
be on the verge of starvation at the
present time.

What About a Cook-Stove?
Now that summer time and "dogdays"
are just ahead, everybody who
"summers" at home, is considering
how to simplify things and get the
^ most comfort out of an uncomforta9
ble situationWe
interview the ice-man: order
thin clothes: plan to ease up here and
relax there: but more -than likely for
get the one most important item in
the whole hot-weather scheme?
w, some means of doing the family cookw
ing without the insufferable heat of a
coal fire in the kitchen.
Every one with experience knows
how tiresome it is to stay in a stuffy
room to prepare a meal, let alone the
doing of a big baking. Hut everyone
doesn't know how easy it is to change
* a hot kitchen to a cool one and do
better cooking at the same time. Just
add to your list of summer conveniences
a New Perfection Wick Blue
Flame Oil Cook-Stove and you've
H done all that any one can do to lessen
hot weather discomfort.
Wouldn't it be fine of a summer
morning to step iVi the kitchen, put on
the kettle, brojl the steak, bake the
muffins, filter the coffee ami give the
breakfast call in one-fourth th* time
you'd take to do it all on a coal stove?
And wouldn't it be fine to be us cool
when the breakfast was prepared as
when you first entered the kitchen?
people who have tried it say that
the New Perfection Oil Stove actually
does everything in the line of cooking
and domestic service without overheating
the room or the worker.
Undoubtedly the reason Is to be
found in the blue flame principle on
which the stove works.
A cylindrical chimney concentrates
I the heat at the stove top and In this
way prevents surface radiation as in a
coal or wood stove.
ft is easy to ste that this lessens
very much the matter of personal
discomfort in summer housekeeping.
So don't forget the New Perfect ion
Oil Stove in your summer plans and
you will have a comfortable kitchen
and tht best cook-stove in the world.
