of North Carolina. Georgia, Alabama and Virginia for a reduction in passenger rates both as to tickets and mileage. Governor Ansel declined to attend the conference that was held in Atlanta between the governors of North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama, but it is understood that he had a pleasant meeting with Mr. Finley in Washington recently when the governor was there attending a convention. It Is recalled also In this con-? nectlon that President Finley in a banquet speech in Charleston recently said that if the North Carolina rates were Anally upheld the roads would A. extend the same rates to South Carollna territory without any legislation seeking to compel, them to do so. ? Union special of December 31, to Spartanburg Journal: When the board of canvassers met this morning to canvass the vote and declare the result in the recent election held here to decide the question of prohibition or a dispensary' for Union county, a protest was filed by J. A. Sawyer and A. K. Hamblin in behalf of twenty-seven members of the Citizens' League, which was recently organized for bettering the moral conditions of Union. The grounds on which the protest was filed are that no registration I certificates were required to be shown at a number of precincts in the county; that the managers at several of the precincts were not sworn as required by law and that the polls at a number of precincts were not opened at the hour required by law and because of the failure of the boxes to be opened on time a number of citizens were deprived of their privilege of voting as their duties took them elsewhere. Soon after the election commissioners met and the protest had been filed, B. F. Townsend and J. C. Hughes argued that the commissioners should proceed with the count and that the protest should be filed afterwards. The commissioners decided, however, not " to canvass the vote until next Monday. At the meeting of the election commissioners next Monday all objec tlons will be heard. W AT THE CHURCHES. BAPTIST Rev. I. Q. Murray. Pastor. Sundhy Services?Sunday school at 10 o'clock a. m.
