? The Japanese government, according
to advices received by the steamship
Tosu Maru. at Victoria, B. C., has
asked for $400,000 to defray the expenses
of despatching a squadron to
the United States next summer. It is
undecided yet whether Admiral Togo
will be in command of this squadron.
There Is some opposition in naval circles
to such a course, but popular
clamor may prevail, In which case the i
naval hero will be the feature of a i
Japanese demonstration In American j
waters.
