Rock Hill, September 3.?In a former Hem of this correspondence Mayor Roddey's position in regard to gambling was stated. He holds that cotton future dealing as exemplified In the exchanges and bucket shops Is on a par with crap shooting and any other form of gambling and that he cannot consistently fine an offender In any one of the latter class when the city council licenses bucket shops. Among the offenders before him at his week end court j was one?Smith, a negro charged ? <?>. vomhlinir In nconrdance with I his stated feelings in the matter, Mayor Roddey cited the negro to appear before the city council at its regular meeting tonight and be tried by that body. He released the negro on his own recognizance. Messrs. D. A. Hurley A Co., who have been conducting stock exchanges In Rock Hill and other towns for the past year or two, have sold out all their Interests to Messrs. Bell A "Fonville, late of Charlotte, N. C., who will continue the business here. Mr. and Mrs. Hurley have moved back to Charlotte, where Mr. Hurley has large Interests. A petition Is being circulated in Rock Hill asking for signatures to request the city council that they refuse to allow cotton exchanges or bucket shops to operate in this city. Messrs. U. M. Pursley and Thos. Cornwell have Just returned from Baltimore where they spent several weeks. Mr. Pursley went to consult ! a specialist in regard to his health and Mr. Cornwell to place his little daughter in the Presbyterian Eye and Ear hospital for an operation on her eyes. General Manager Maloney ana oar. A. O. Walker, representing the com- 1 pany which runs the Water, Light ' and Power company of Rock Hill, Florence and other towns In the ' state, are in the city on business con- 1 nected with their company. There ' is quite a lot of talk going on among < those who are the movers in business in Rock Hill and there seems to be considerable sentiment in favor of the municipality owning its own plant. An electrical engineer will come here this week to look over . the situation in regard to this and to report to the council. ' Miss Pearl Fewell of Ebenezer left several days since for Arkansas where she will teach school this ' winter. ' Miss Mattie Smith, also of Eben- 1 eser, will leave Thursday for Arkan-' 1 sas, where she will teach music. ' She is a graduate of Winthrop s college. 1 Mr. A. To Fix Cotton Prices.?The Cotton Growers' association will soon hold a meeting at which the executive committee will arrange its cam- i ' paign for the season now on and wift at the same time fix the price for cot- ? ton. This price is what the executive committee suggests its members should get before selling their product In the meawhile the association is doing some work and defining Its po sitlon. Its latest announcement is: "To the cotton growers of the south: "Bear speculators are hammering down the price. "Spinners will, therefore, buy sparingly. "If you want a profit on this crop you must market sparingly. Every bale you rush on the market is the strongest possible bear argument.
