The Water Question?Death of S. M.

Rook Hill, May 28.?The special
meeting of the city council Wednesday
evening was a rather interesting
and spirited one. It was called to
consider the matter of the water supply
which has been the subject of discussion
oft and on for some months.
The plain fact is that the Water. Light
and Power company which has the
franchise is not and has not for some
time been living up to the contract
in that the said franchise calls for
200,000 gallons of water per day
while, according to the W. L. & P.
people themselves, the supply at pres

states they are finding trouble in getting
an expert to sink the additional
well which they promised some months
ago, although making active efforts
to secure some one. The council is
of the opinion that it has had enough
of promises in the matter and insists
that immediate action be taken to
protect the city. Consequently a motion
was carried to the effect that the
power company be notified that it
would be expected to sink the well
within forty days from date, to supply
the water according to terms of the
franchise and that If not complied!
with at the end of six months the
terms of said franchise would be enforced.
The terms of the franchise
provide for its sale to another than
the holder when the holder fails to
live up to requirements and fails to
remedy any deficiency within six
months after notice of such deficiency.
The council does not seem to wish to
impose any hardships on the power
company but to feel that the duty of
their body is to enforce the terms as
a protection to the people of the city.
Rev. W. L. Lingle, pastor of the
First Presbyterian church, came home
Saturday evening to fill his pulpit on
Sunday. He returned Monday to the
bedside of his sick mother, who lives
near Salisbury. X. C. Her death Is
expected at any time.
The ladies of the White Memorial
chapel congregation will on Thursday
evening next, give a reception in the
church building from 8 to 10 o'clock,
in honor of Rev. Jno. Knox* Colt, the
new pastor In charge of the Presbyterian
chapel work here.
Bishop Ellison Capers of the diocese
ot South Carolina will preach at
the church of Our Savior next Sunday.
At the morning servipe a number will
be confirmed.
Mr. S. M. Xeely died Saturday at
the home of his brother near Edgemore.
He was about thirty-five years
of age and unmarried. The funeral
was held at the home. The interment
was at Fishing Creek church yard and
was conducted by Rev. Arthur Rogers
of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian
church.
The Postal Telegraph company's office
which has been in M. F. Owens'
grocery store, corner Main and Depot
. streets, will be moved to McElwee's
Cafe In a short time.
Mrs. J. B. Johnson, who was a delegate
to Jhe general convention of the
King's Daughters, recently in session
at Wheeling, W. Va., returned home
Saturday.
Mr. Alex Long and Mrs. Long, who
are now at Spartanburg, will arrive

In the future. Mr. Long is the president
of the new $400,000 cotton mill
which is to be built here at once.
Dr. Peter E. Hines of Cambridge.
Maryland, visited Prof. E. Walter
Hall, Monday.
The family of Mr. Harry Gibson,
who formerly lived here, but more recently
in Charleston, will return to
Rock Hill about July 1st.
? All loyal Spaniards are stirred with
enthusiasm over the approaching marriage
of King Alfonso to the British
Princess Ena. of Battenburg. The
princess is now in Spain, having arrived
last week with her retinue and
her crossing the border was made the
occasion of a great demonstration.
King Alfonso met her at the frontier,
and thousands of Spaniards were present
to take part in the ceremony.
From the frontier to Madrid the progress
of the couple was one of truly
royal splendor, and the courtship is
now going on in Madrid. The queento-be
made herself tremendously popular
with the Spanish people Sunday
by interceding with Alfonso for the
pardon of Fernando Levera who had
bet n convicted of a capital offense after
an exciting trial and who was to have
been executed Sunday. The people in
terested In Levera addressed a petition
to the princess and after inquiring as
fully Into the matter as possible she
asked the king for a pardon. The king
consulted his ministers and the pardon
was Issued and sent to the proper officials
by telegraph just as the death
march was about to be commenced.
The act was a very popular one and
the people generally were pleased. The
Princess Ena is a very beautiful woman
and is quite popular among the
English people. The marriage is to be
one of the grandest court functions
that has taken place in Europe for
some time.
