Yorkville enquirer. [volume] (Yorkville, S.C.) 1855-2006, March 13, 1906, Image 3
? After deliberating for thirteer
hours, the jury In the case of Dr. J
B. Matthews, the Greensboro, N. C.
physician, charged with the murdei
of his wife on December 1, 1905, or
last Friday morning at 9:30 ocloct
returned a verdict of guilty of murder
in the second degree. Judge Ferguson
sentenced the prisoner to th<
penitentiary for a term of twentj
years. Counsel for Matthews immediately
announced that an appea
would he taken to the suDreme court
Matthews relied upon a plea of insanity
as a defence. There was expert
testimony to support the contention.
The prosecution established ?
motive, however, by introducing evidence
to show that Matthews hac
threatened to kill his wife on a former
occasion, when he claimed thai
she had been unfaithful. The mosi
sensational allegation at the trial was
that Matthews had injected strychnine
into his wife while she was ill
and while pretending to be offering 8
prayer at her bedside. Witnesses
from Richmond, Va., testified that tht
prisoner had made an unsuccessful
attempt to commit suicide fourteen
years ago because of the death of his
sweetheart.

To York Co. Farmers:
I cannot promise you 15c for your
cotton next fall, but if you will plant
the seed I suggest. I will contraot with
you to take all the cotton you grow
from these seed at $7.50 for every
500 lb. hale over the price of ordinary
cotton the day of sale. Every farmer
availing himself of this offer can easily
reap a benefit in the price of his
cotton, which will enable him to pay
for his seed and his fertilizers besfdes.
If nothing prevents J will be at
Bullock's Creek. Friday, March 15th,
at 10 a. m.. and at Sharon at 4 p. tnof
the same day and at Hickory
Grove, Saturday, March 17, in the
morning, for the purpose of taking
orders for Seed and signing contracts
on above terms.
As it will take two or three weeks
to get the seed Jt will be necessary to
send the orders off within the next
ten days, and I would be glad to hear
t from any who may feel Interested.
Unless all signs fail we will have lower
prices for cotton this fall than last
and the proposition I offer will be of
great benefit to all who will take hold
of it.
