Snyder, former lieutenant governor of Louisiana, died at Rochester, Minn., Friday Two thousand bales of cotton were dek stroyed by fire In Columbus, Ga., * Thursday Albert J. Pitkin", president of the American Locomotive company, died at his home In Schenectady, N. Y., Sunday The corner-stone of the McKlnley monument, the gift or the American people, was iaiu in Canton, O., Thursday. Among those present were Vice President Fairbanks, Postmaster General Cortelyou, and David R. Francis of St. Louis A German torpedo boat collided with a small cruiser in Kiel Bay, near the national German naval station, during a snowstorm Friday night, drowning one officer and thirty-two sailors...... Thirty-nine persons lost their lives and several others were injured by fire in a lodging house in Glasgow, Scotland, Saturday. One-hundred or more persons lost their lives in the sinking of the British steamer, Hilda, In the English channel Saturday. Several of the bodies of the victims have been washed ashore on the French coast near St. Malo lighthouse $4,000,000 worth of property was destroyed by fire in the Overholt Distilling company's plant at Broadford, Pa., Sunday. | Report of National Ginnhrs.?The cotton report of the National Glnners association was made public at Dallas. Texas, last Sunday, by Secretary Blackwell. The report was not to have been made public until yesterday but it is understood that a portion of it had- "leaked" in some unaccountable manner. The crop Is 84.7 per cent picked and 78 per cent ginned, indicating a crop for this year of 9,459,793. Following Is the report by states: Alabama ginned 938,030 and 89.7 picked;total crop 1,141,854. Arkansas ginned 264,120 and Is 67.2 per cent picked, indicating a crop of 446,880. Florida ginned 54,180 and is 92.1 per cent picked; total crop 78,140. Georgia ginned 1,437.750 and is 94.3 per cent picked, indicating a crop of 1,577,379. Indian Territory ginned 167,340 and is 68.4 per cent picked; total crop 262,911. Kentucky ginned 822, and is 67.8 per cent picked; total crop 1,560; Louisiana ginned 313,390, picked 75.4 per > cent; total crop 530,868. Mississippi ginned 706,914; picked 74.3 per cent; total crop 1,097,000. Missouri ginned 20 140; picked 68.7 per cent; total crop 37,190. North Carolina ginned 507,580; picked 93.7 per cent; total crop 563,307. Oklahoma ginned 161,480; picked 70.2 per cent: total crop 26,460. South Carolina ginned 982,780; picked 94.3 per cent; .total crop 999,367. Tennessee ginned 146,260; picked 74.2 per cent; total crop 243.070. Weston, of the South Carolina division of the Southern Cotton association, said in an Interview last Friday: "Today I am la receipt of Instructions from headquarters In Atlanta to institute a movement toward securing pledges from the farmers for the cotton which they now have on hand for 15 cents. The association considered 11 cents a fair but rot unreasonable price for cotton, but In view of the very aggressive campaign that has been Instituted against co'ton In the last few days It would be absurd for the Southern Cotton association to stand by and see the producers of cotton throughout the J south despoiled of millions of dollars. We must convince the spinners of the world that the price of cotton Is to be fixed by the producer and not by the speculator. ? Chester special of November 18 to News and Courier: One of the most t Interesting damage suits that has ever attracted the attention of the people of Chester was concluded this evening, after consuming nearly three days, resulting In a verdict of $1,500 for the plaintiff. In August last John Wier, a young white man. was Instantly killed by coming In contact with a live wire of the city electric lighting plant, and his heirs Instituted, suit for $20,000, alleging that it was through the carelessness of the defendant that the young man met his death. The wire causing his death is the cable used (or the purpose of raising and lowering arc lights and under normal conditions does not convey a current, but owing to atmospheric conditions and a defect In the Insulation, was highly charged on the nlgnt of the accident, and this fact was known to the deceased. The city contended that Weir's death was due to his own carelessness. Inasmuch as he had been warned of the danger only a few minutes before. HICKORY GROVE.
