so much has been said during the past
few weeks,
THE FLOWER SHOW.
The annual flower show of the Floral
and Willing Workers societies of the
Presbyterian church, was opened In the
court house this morning and has been
a centre of attraction to the ladles of
Yorkvllle during the day.
The exhibits are both numerous and
creditable. Many of the specimens
seem to be perfection as to size and
beauty, and the common verdict seems
to be that In some respects the ladles
have been able to make marked Improvement
even over their former
splendid efforts. This Is most noticeable,
probably. In the matter of arrangement,
which seems to be well nigh
perfect.
The names of the various exhibitors
are as follows:
Miss Daisy Gist?Roses and chrysanthemums.
Mrs. I. D. Witherspoon?Roses and
potted plants.
Mrs. W. G. White?Roses, chrysanthemums,

The attendance during the day has
been very gratifying: but that it will
be still more so during this afternoon
is quite probable.

morning to make a photograph of the
exhibits: but because of the peculiar
difficulties. Involved in such an undertaking
in surroundings so unfavorable
for good photography, she will not
? know until later to what extent she
has succeeded.
LOCAL LACONICS.
Changes of Schedule.
The C. & N.-W. railroad is arranging
to change its schedule on November
13, after which date its trains will
run through from Collettsville to
Chester. There are to be some
changes of schedule on the Southern
road soon; but the reporter has not
been advised of their nature.
Junction at Rock Hill. ^
It is understood that the Southern
railway people have selected Rock
Hill as the half-wav station or iunc
tional point of the Charleston division,
instead of Blacksburg, which has had
that advantage since the building of
the road. When the arrangement goes
into operation, which will be shortly,
the freight train crews that now spend
the night at Blacksburg will stop at
Rock Hill instead. Newport is said
to be the exact half-way station between
Camden and Marlon.
Woodson Is Hopeful.?Urey Woodson
said he was speaking for the committee
last Saturday when he predicted
the overwhelming election of Judge
Parker to the presidency. He predicted
that all the doubtful states will be
Democratic and also that some states
called Republican will be and are
doubtful. Secretary Woodson says:
"I have every confidence that Judge
Parker will be elected. I have been
here one hundred days now, and I am
ready to announce from observation
and what we have received that Parker
will be elected.
"All doubtful states, so-called, will
be in the Democratic column. Some
states called purely Republican are
now in the doubtful column. We will
carry New York. New Jersey, Connecticut.
Indiana, Maryland, West Virginia.
Idaho, Colorado, Utah and Nevada.
"In other words, all the doubtful
states are for us and for Parker's election.
"Illinois is doubtful. Ohio Is doubtful.
The big men who controlled that
state are now dead. The Republicans
assume that they are going to win
there, but we hear they might lose.
Even California has sent good reports
to us and we are hopeful of carrying
that state.
"Maryland is certainly as Democratic
as Kentucky; West Virginia is as
sure as Maryland."
MERE-MENTION.
Edgar Allen, a prominent Republican
leader in Virginia politics, and
former United States district attorney,
committed suicide in a country road
in Henrico county, Va? Friday. Political
disappointment is assigned as
the cause of the deed About sixty
miners lost their lives in an explosion
which occurred at the Tercio, Co.,
coal mines Friday Ben Clarke, the
negro who killed Chief of Police B. E.
Harrrick of Shelby last August, was
hanged in the Shelby jail last Friday.
\s a result of the explosion of the
boilers in a mill at Satilla Bluff, Ga.,
Friday, three men were killed and the
mill property demolished A fire
of Incendiary origin, wnicn swepi a
Brooklyn wharf Friday, caused the
death of one fireman, serious injuries
to another, damaged four ocean
steamers, and destroyed property estimated
at $1,000,000 Three persons
were killed and twelve injured in a
rear-end collision between two sections
of a World's Fair special train
on the Missouri Pacific railroad at Tipton,
Mo., Saturday.

Does Russia Really Want Trouble??Excitement
was caused In London
yesterday by the report that the
Russian fleet, on its way to Tangier,
had shelled a British collier, and the
movements of the British fleet at uibraltar
tend to confirm the report. The
news of the firing came from Tangier.
The Baltic fleet officers told it,
declaring that the vessel carried no
lights.
The British fleet has been oitfered to
stop all British colliers passing through
the straits and to bring them to Gibraltar.
The warships have been ordered
to escort the British sloop Assaye.
Tfce fear Is growing that the Russian
war party Is trying to force war on
Grea* Britain.
