E. C. Johnson, L. C. Harrison, J. Edgar Poag and C. W. Spencer, all of Rock Hill. It is capitalized at $500,000. Special Term of the Court. A petition was circulated among the members of the bar yesterday asking the chief justice of the supreme court to call an extra term of the court of common pleas for York county to convene on November 30, shortly after the adjournment of the regular term. The chief justice will be asked to designate Mr. J. E. McDonald of Winnsboro, as special judge to preside at this extra term. Bethel Presbytery. The fall meeting of Bethel Presbytery will be held this year with Jefferson church in Chesterfield county, commencing on October 2. Delegates from this section will buy tickets to Kershaw, where they will be met by private conveyances. The railroad company has granted reduced rates. Rev. W. G. Neville of Yorkville, who isi stated clerk, can give any further Information that may be desired. Slayer of Lewis Arrested. Wm. Hampton, the Negro who killed Squire Lewis near Lowryville recently is in jail. He was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Sandifer, near Halsellville, in Chester county last Friday. The deputy sheriff found Hampton at work in a cotton patch. He raaae no euun lu run: but quietly came on to Yorkville. He is only about eighteen years of age. He claims that the killing was accidental; but the people of Lowryville neighborhood are not so sure about that. Lewis, the Negro who was killed, was about sixty years of age, and had the reputation of being a quiet, peaceable man, who would not knowingly give offense to anybody. Bell Telephone Franchise. There was a special meeting of the county board of commissioners last Friday for the purpose of considering an application from the Bell Telephone company for a franchise to string their wires along the various public roads of the county. The board was not disposed to be reckless about giving away the privilege asked for. After due consideration it was decided to allow the construction of a line between Yorkville and Rock Hill provided the telephone people should keep well to the outer edge of the right of way and on the far side of the ditches. The matter of granting rights of way along other roads will be taken up separately in the case of each particular road. SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS. They Want the Cotton. Spartanburg merchants have arranged to employ a cotton buyer on a guaranteed salary, and it will be his duty to pay as much for cotton as may be paid by anybody else within hauling distance of Spartanburg. Pitts Not Guilty. In the case of Reuben Pitts, the Spartanburg school teacher, who killed one of his pupils some months ago, the Jury returned a verdict of "not guilty." The case was concluded Saturday afternoon and the Jury remained out two hours and fifteen minutes, Compromise Verdict. Robert Gunnels, the young ureenvHle white man who was charged last week of having committed a criminal assault on a four-year-old Negro girl was convicted last Saturday of having made an attempt to commit such an assault. The circumstantial evidence in the case was quite complete; but in the absence of actual proof the jury agreed to a compromise verdict. To Recover Stolen Goods, Magistrate J. M. Bates of Jonesvllle, Union county, made a raid In his neighborhood one day last week In the interest of the Pacolet Manufacturing company. He found where people had made stolen cloth Into underclothes and bedclothes,. and. he seized all that he could identify. There are still thousands of yards of cloth In the hands of the thieves of the country surrounding. It is estimated that fully three thousand bales of the cotton that was washed away by the flood is still unaccounted for. The Military Board. Columbia correspondence of News and Courier: Adjutant and Inspector General Frost will soon issue a call for a meeting of the military board of the state.- This board was created by the legislature for the distribution of the fund appropriated for the support of the militia. The board consists of Governor Heyward. General Frost, Colonel Henry Schatche, General Wille Jones and Captain E. M. Blythe. The board will meet sometime during the present week and make a distribution of the $8,000 appropriated at the last session of the legislature for the maintenance of the state militia. Organizing the Grocers. Charleston dispatch of September 16: Organizer Geo. J. Williams of the National Retail Grocers' association addressed a meeting of merchants tonight at the Turnverein hall and at its con elusion the Charleston branch of the association was organized. The purposes of the association, the promotion of the Interests of the grocers, were fully set forth. Mr. Williams attacked the trading stamp agencies, declaring these to be a tax on business and a means of cheapening labor and commodities. He opposed the proposed parcel post law which if passed by congress, he said, would work great injury to all retail trade for it would allow the big department stores to do business in every town in the country in large volume, and without having to pay taxes or licenses, the retailers could not compete and would be crowded out of business. He stated that his association advocated a pure food law which was especially in the interest of the people, and he went fully into a discussion of the plans and purposes of the association and the benefits which will accrue to the grocers in joining. He will visit upwards of thirty cities and towns in South Carolina and will attend the state convention which meets at Columbia on October 27. AT THE CHiRCHES. TRINITY METHODIST EPISCOPAL. REV. J. L.
