The C. & N.-W.
Yorkville correspondence News anc
Courier: While very little is being said
about extending the Carolina and
Nortli-Western railroad over the mountains,
from its present terminus, Lenoir,
N. C., to Bristol, or some othei
point in Tennessee, still it is a fact that
a force of about 300 hands is now employed
at a point about twenty miles
beyond Lenoir in grading the proposed
extension, and there is no reason tc
doubt that a large additional force will

and that in a comparatively short time
the "missing link" will ue supplied and
trains of freight and passenger cars be
in operation over this "shortest line tc
the west." A glance at the map will
convince the most sceptical that the
new line will possess advantages not
now enjoyed by any line now in operation.
It is said that one reason why so
little has been said recently about the
extension is because the owners of the
load have an abundance of capital with
which to carry out their plans and it is,
therefore, not necessary to keep themselves
before the public. The part of
the road now In operation from Chester
to Lenoir is at present doing practically
all the business that it can handle,
and especially is this true of the freight
traffic. The company could handle its
business at Yorkville much more conveniently
than it does If the town council
did not continue to refuse to allow
it to extend its side track across East
Liberty street. Ever since the gauge
was changed last spring the road has
been forced to use a spur track in order
to reach its freight depot here, and as
a result lots of time is wasted in shifting,
and often the lives of employees
endangered.
Ci'p Races Finished.?After three
unsuccessful attempts for lack of wind,

yesterday. The Reliance won again
and the cup, of course, remains in
America. Sir Thomas Lipton does not
think he will try again.

We wish to say Just a few words
about Staple Goods and prices. Last
summer when we saw the inevitable
rise that was coming in Staples, such
as Sheetings, Shirtings, Outings, Alamances,
Prints, Denims, etc., we began
to buy and bought as long as we
could get the goods at the prices that
were then ruling. We bought an im mense
stock of goods and these goods
are now on our counters. When it
comes to prices this fall you will Ind
here the same prices that ruled a year
ago. This fact means that If you buy
your Staples here you will be sure to
save from a half to two or three cents
a yard on all kinds of Staple goods. If
this saving is of any consequence to
you you will know where to do your
