Yorkville enquirer. [volume] (Yorkville, S.C.) 1855-2006, May 21, 1902, Image 3
She surrendered her pistol and razor to
Magistrate Johnson. Magistrate Johnson
said yesterday that he understood
that the Good woman is getting along
very nicely and would recover.
For Love of Ilia Honey.
It is not often that a Negro commits
suicide; but a serious attempt of recent
date is reported from Bowling Green, on
the northern edge of the county. Tom
McCleave and his wife had been living
in Gastonia. As the result of a disagreement
the wife left and went down
to Bowling Green, taking up her residence
in a cabin on the premises of
Mr. W. B. Flanagan. Tom came down
on Monday of last week and tried to
persuade his wife to go back with him.
She refused. He begged and pleaded;
but she remained obdurate. The unrtor?tnnfiine
is that she had another
darkey lover whom she liked better.
Finally Tom declared: "If you don't go
back with me. I am going to shoot myself."
"Shoot away," sne replied, "I
do not care." On receiving this heartless
permission, McCleave fired his pistol
at himself. Tne bullet took effect
about an inch above his heart. At last
accounts he was still alive.
No I'ardon.
Governor McSweeney has refused to
pardon Wallace Ramsey, white, convicted
at the last term of the court of
general sessions of grand larceny and
sentenced to the public works or the
state penitentiary at hard labor for a
period of two years. Although the case
against Ramsey was quite plain, a petition
that was circulated for his pardon
was extensively signed. This was
backed by a numerously signed certifl- 1
cate to me effect that the petitioners
were representative citizens. But Solicitor
Henry threw cold water on the i
movement. When asked for his advice
in the matter, he told the governor the
blunt truth to the effect that Ramsey 1
was convicted by a first-class jury of i
stealing a bale of cotton to be used in <
re-estab.ishing himself in the business i
of manufacturing blockade whisky and i
that he deserved punishment. The gov- <
ernor took Mr. Henry's view of the l
matter. t
